2014 UCSD COSMOS Ethics Essay Award Winners

UCSD COSMOS recently awarded cash prizes to high school participants who competed in the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology Essay Competition. 180 COSMOS students submitted essays that covered the ethical considerations with regards to their final science or engineering research projects. The top essays were determined by a panel of judges from the Center for Ethics. Cash awards were given to the following finalists:

  • First Place: Shannon Hwang (Cluster 8)
  • Second Place: Akua McLeod (Cluster 6)
  • Third Place (tie): Yu-Jane Chen (Cluster 3)
  • Third Place (tie): Leora Mazumdar (Cluster 7)

2013 UCSD COSMOS Ethics Essay Contest Winners

2013 UCSD COSMOS Intel Scholars

Eight 2013 UCSD COSMOS students were chosen to be Intel Scholars and were provided with scholarships to attend the COSMOS program. In March 2014, the COSMOS Intel Scholars presented their final research project at the Intel Scholars Reception to campus representatives, COSMOS representatives, Intel representatives and students' families. 2013 COSMOS California Nobel Laureate Dinner at the California Science Center Honors Nobel Laureates and COSMOS Alumni

The COSMOS UC Office of the President hosted a dinner on April 10th under the wings of the space shuttle Endeavour, UCSD COSMOS 2012 students Angel Lara, Matthew O'Hagan, Casey Takahashi and Mariana Valdez were invited to present their project poster to attending Nobel Laureates and distinguished guests. The keynote speaker for this special evening was astronaut Dr. Garrett Reisman, who served aboard Endeavour, Atlantis, Discovery and the International Space Station.

High School Students Win UCSD COSMOS Ethics Essay Awards

UCSD COSMOS recently awarded cash prizes to high school participants who competed in the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology Essay Competition. Over 140 students submitted essays that covered the ethical considerations with regards to their final science or engineering research projects. The top eight essays were determined by a panel of judges from the Center for Ethics. Cash awards ranging from $50-$150 were awarded to the finalists from the following high schools:

The mission of the UCSD Gordon Center is to educate and train effective engineering leaders who create new products and jobs that benefit society. The center offers an engineering leadership education and awards program for high school, undergraduate, graduate and professional students with leadership potential. Each COSMOS student received a Gordon Fellows Medal and a $500.00 cash award.


COSMOS Students Present Their Research at the California Nobel Laureate Dinner, November 8, 2010

UCSD COSMOS was pleased to have four students from the 2010 session present their research at the prestigious California Nobel Laureate Dinner on the evening of November 8th, 2010. The event was held at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and was organized by the University of California Office of the President. In attendance were California Nobel Laureates, high-ranking California officials, and California's top scientists. Congratulations to our students and students from the other three COSMOS sites!

High School Students Awarded Intel Research Grant, October 27, 2010 [press release]

The following high school students have been selected to receive a $500 Intel Research Grant in order to support their continued research in science or engineering. The Intel Corporation is a major sponsor of the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS). The goal of this competitive award is to support research by UCSD COSMOS alumni, to encourage them to enter projects in science fairs and competition, and to enable them to excel in future academic endeavors.
