Richard Skalak was a pioneer in Bioengineering and Biomechanics. He served over 40 years on the Faculty at Columbia University in New York and at the University of California San Diego. After traditional studies in mechanical engineering fields he turned in 1960's his brilliant engineering mind to biomedical problems. He did groundbreaking work on the red blood membrane, on flow of blood cells in human tissue, helped to develop titanium implants in human bone and skeletal reconstruction, and applied engineering to cancer, sickle cell disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis and other diseases.
