The Marine Physical Laboratory, at UC San Diego’s world renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is currently seeking inquisitive, motivated undergraduate students with exceptional aptitude for quantitative science to apply for the 2017 MPL Summer Internship Program.
 
Undergraduate college students majoring in Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Geology are encouraged to apply. This ten-week internship will offer qualified students the opportunity to work with some of the most notable scientists in the world and learn about marine science and technology while earning a modest salary.

Required Skills:

* Currently enrolled as 1st, 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate - and not in your senior year - at a college or university with a major applicable to research done at MPL

* A U.S. citizen or permanent resident

1. SLAM Development TIP Team  

Our deep learning team helps autonomous car understand the world using the cutting-edge neural network technology. You will play an important role in creating novel algorithms for advanced perception, localization and putting them into a scale. The successful job applicant will work with our experts in building the next-generation of autonomous sensing algorithms. The students will be doing:

  • Design and implement mapping, localization, and pose estimation algorithms based on vision, LIDAR, IMU, and/or RADAR
  • Research and development of perception algorithms including 3D computer vision, multiple view geometry, scene understanding, tracking and recognition
  • Evaluate and develop sensor fusion algorithms for camera, laser, and other non-contact sensors

2. Big Data Development TIP Team  

This project works on TuSimple’s Storage and Data Processing Infrastructure. You will play an important role in designing computing and storage platforms that enables researchers and other engineers to implement their ideas in an efficient way. You are expected to have strong skills in technical design, implementation and troubleshooting.

The students will be doing:

  • Design data processing pipeline and analysis tools
  • Build systems to manage spatiotemporal data
  • Design visualization tools
  • Design modern build and deployment pipelines
  • Design tool chains to automate our workflows

Required Skills:

3. Simulation Development TIP Team  

This team will be working on the design of the implementation of a high-performance realistic driving simulation framework.

  • Design and implement a simulation framework for autonomous cars
  • 3D rendering and data visualization
  • Dynamic modeling and simulation
  • Build mathematical models for vehicles, roads, and sensors, including noise and error modeling
  • Build processes and pipelines to replay recorded sensor data in a simulated environment
  • Help building AI for different types of agents

Required Skills:

The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) is a United States Navy command, headquartered in Patuxent River, MD with military and civilian personnel stationed at eight principal continental United States sites and one site overseas.
