1. Anchor Design Application for SmartPhones - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
NOTE: Students hired to this position should be available on Wednesday, April 28th for a MANDATORY orientation for students going abroad in Summer 2010. This session will be from 6:30-8:30pm. More details will be provided upon hire.

Hilti is seeking 3 interns (1 structural engineer and 2 Computer Science students) to work on a team in Schaan, Liechtenstein (100km east of Zurich, Switzerland).

The goal of this project is to develop a ready-to-use application for concrete "anchor design and selection" to run on smartphones (e.g. iPhone or WinMobile).

Tasks include:

1. Development of the graphical user interface (GUI)

2. Simple design calculator (existing algorithm)

3. Develop appropriate data structure

The GUI should utilize established IT industry technologies to communicate the software functionality in a simple and intuitive way. The team will work with a Hilti project manager and interact with Hilti-internal as well as Hilti-external personnel.

Project Requires:

1. One Structural Engineering Student preferably with design experience.

2. Two Computer Science Students with focus on software ergonomics/usability/GUI design and programming skills.

Seniors and Graduate students are preferred for all positions.

Essential Skills:

1. Experience in programming apps for smart phones. Knowledge of graphical-design capabilities and programming skills.

Languages: English. But please note that you will work with an English/French translator to make this application available in both French and English.

Project Location: Schaan, Liechtenstein (100km east of Zurich, Switzerland).

Additional Information:

- Internship will be paid a monthly salary

- Students will be provided money for monthly health insurance.

- Student housing will not be paid for, but the monthly stipend is more than enough to cover local housing. Assistance will be provided in located affordable/safe housing.

- Flight costs will be paid.

- Please note that this should be looked at as a whole package. Your monthly stipend will not be what you would be paid here in San Diego, but they are paying for a handful of other costs to get you to their location and have a great international experience.

1. Multimedia Apps for Next Generation Mobile User Experience - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Qualcomm is seeking 3-4 interns to work on a team in Seoul, Korea this summer.

The goals of this project are to develop machine learning software for mobile user interactions. Those interactions can be triggered by the user in form of pattern recognition tasks such as voice and audio recognition and also in form of self learning and inference principles so that the mobile device makes recommendations based on its sensory information. This kind of technology development involves knowledge in embedded systems, machine learning, signal processing and a number of multimedia technologies including audio, video, graphics, and display. The team of interns will be given a specific development task and work closely with Qualcomm researcher engineers. The team will also demonstrate the applications on the Qualcomm multimedia platform.

Skill requirements include:

1. Programming experience in C/C++

2. Matlab

Desired (not required) Skills:

1. Machine Learning

Education: BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

Helpful Courses include: Digital Signal Processing, Signal Processing, and Image Processing.

Project Location: Seoul, Korea

Additional Information:

- Salary for this position will be paid at in-country rates. Therefore, you will be paid similar wages to interns in this country, versus what you would be making here in the US.

- Housing is completely covered and taken care of by Qualcomm.

- Travel will be arranged and paid by Qualcomm.

- Health Insurance WILL NOT be paid for by Qualcomm. But, the Team Internship Program will assist those students hired in finding affordable health care coverage for the summer.

2. TDD System Resource Allocation Algorithm Study - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED

Qualcomm is seeking 3 students to work on a team in Beijing, China this summer.

Corporate R&D China office has an internship position in evaluating mobile resource allocation algorithms under different network loading conditions for TDD systems. The candidate will work with our system engineers in developing simulations platform for evaluating optimized resource allocation algorithms that intend to maximize mobile user experience. Candidate is expected to develop simulation results for different algorithm assumptions and help system engineering team in evaluating the tradeoff of algorithm choices.

Requirements:

Good understanding of mobile wireless communication. Proficient in C/C++ software development. Experience in Matlab is highly preferred. Strong team work spirit. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to communicate clearly, organize effectively and document work thoroughly.

Education:

Junior, Senior, or Graduate level student in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. MUST HAVE A 3.5 GPA or better.

1. Mission Control HIPerSpace System - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Sun Engineering Consultants International (SECI) is seeking 3 students to build a HIPerSpace system for mission control.

HIPerSpace is the next generation concept for ultra-high resolution distributed display systems that can scale into the billions of pixels, providing unprecedented high-capacity visualization capabilities. The system will be used to serve as an information display system for relevant data to the operation of a railroad station such as arrival and departure times, special announcement and general news. In addition, it will serve as a media wall to render high resolution video content according to customer specifications.

SECI is seeking self-starters who can quickly grasp fundamental elements of technical problems and provide creative solutions while working in interdisciplinary teams.

Candidates should have a strong background and knowledge in the following:

- Programming languages C/C++

- OpenGL (Shading language is a plus)

- Experience in GUI design (preferable Qt)

- Operating System Unix (Linux)

- Experience with distributed computing and networking is desirable.

- Good organization, communication, and writing skills are essential.

Team will include:

1. A team member with strong domain knowledge, e.g. topics relevant to command and control with particular focus on railroad applications, who can develop the initial mock-ups for the target applications.

2. A team member with strong programming and overall implementation skill that can take these ideas and turn them into applications quickly.

3. A team member with strong interface design (HCI) experience that can craft a front-end and controls that will make sense to the customer.

Education Background: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

Chinese language will be helpful, but not required.

Accommodations:

- Round trip international airfare between Los Angeles and Guangzhou, China.

- Housing in Guangzhou near SECI's Guangzhou office.

- Standard two meal (lunch and dinner) compensation per day.

- Hourly wage.

SANYO Electric Co. Ltd. is looking for a two person summer intern team to go to Osaka, Japan.

This team should be capable of researching the enhanced renewable energy technology, and designing market strategy with technical product competitive analysis and business benefits.

SANYO Smart Energy System includes Power Source Management solutions with the worlds first product of large capacity of Li-ion batteries and PV, to improve energy use for an entire campus, a single building, and all the way down to the elvel of individual house.

Some examples of what the interns will research include: solar forecasting, adaptive charging scheduler, or customer optimization of variable battery and PV portfolio.

This team will ideally be two graduate students: One Electrical Engineer and one MBA (marketing and finance).

The Electrical Engineer should be a software engineer with knowledge or background of multi-objective optimization and/or machine learning.

Internship Details:

- Paid a daily stipend
