The members of the Stac Scholarship Committee were impressed with Smith’s stellar contributions to the cooperative engineering project. Letters of recommendation from UC San Diego professors testified to his expertise, maturity, reliability and creativity. "We feel it is our responsibility to invest in the engineering talent pool in San Diego," said Jim Nicol, vice president of product operations at Stac. "Mark met or exceeded the Committee’s criteria for awarding the scholarship, and we feel certain that Mark will be a significant contributor to the IT industry."

"This scholarship will be an enormous help to me," said Mark Smith. "Stac’s generous scholarship will now allow me to ease the outside work pressure and concentrate more on my studies. I feel truly blessed."

"Stac has consistently been there for our students, recognizing their excellence and rewarding them with vital scholarships," said Jeanne Ferrante, Professor and Chair of UC San Diego’s Computer Science and Engineering Department at the Jacobs School. This financial support from Stac for the 1998-99 school year goes to an outstanding student, Mark Smith.
