The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and General Atomics have been deeply saddened by the loss of one of their most beloved colleagues.  Dr. Massoud Simnad passed away on December 15, 2001 at his home in Virginia.  Besides his wife, Dr. Lenora Brown-Simnad, he is survived by his children, Dr. Virginia Simnad-Ashlin and David Ashlin and Jeffery and Carol Simnad and their families.

Dr. Simnad received his BS degree from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England, in 1942 and his Ph.D. in Metallurgy and Physical Chemistry from Cambridge University in 1946.  After serving as Research Associate at Cambridge University, he was a senior researcher and faculty member in the Metallurgical Engineering Department and Metals Research Laboratory at Carnegie-Mellon University from 1949-56.  He moved to General Atomics in 1956, serving as Senior Technical Advisor on materials and fuels for nuclear energy and fusion research programs until 1981.  Joining the AMES (currently MAE) Department at UCSD as Adjunct Professor in 1981, Professor Simnad continued to teach energy courses through 2001.

Dr. Simnad authored over 135 publications and was an invited lecturer at many national and international conferences.  He presented an invited paper at the National Academy of Sciences Conference on the 50th Anniversary of the Discovery of Fission in 1989; the American Nuclear Society awarded him the Certificate of Merit in 1965 and the Outstanding Achievement Award in 1993; he was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering in 1995.

To pay tribute to Dr. Simnad's legacy at General Atomics and UCSD, a Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2002 from 3-5 p.m. at the UCSD Faculty Club, with reception following on the Terrace.  You are cordially invited to join the Simnad family, friends, his UCSD colleagues and the General Atomics community for this tribute.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Massoud Simnad Scholarship Fund may be made to The UC San Diego Foundation and sent to Mr. Adam Di Profio at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, Mail Code 0411, UCSD.
