UCSD Senior Vice Chancellor Marsha Chandler announced today that Frieder Seible, Executive Associate Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering and Professor of Structural Engineering, has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of the Jacobs School effective July 1, 2002. This appointment follows after the announcement that Dean Robert W. Conn will step down on July 1 after almost nine years as Dean.

In addition to his current leadership role at the School, Professor Seible was the founding chair of the Department of Structural Engineering and served in that position until his appointment as Executive Associate Dean in January 2002. He is also the founder and director of the Powell Structural Research Laboratories and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Senior Vice Chancellor Chandler stated that Professor Seible has been an integral part of the growth and success of the Jacobs School of Engineering and will help to ensure effective leadership and a smooth transition from July 1st through the conclusion of the nationwide decanal search.
