Legacy Walk: stories behind the pavers

Legacy Walk

On any given day, visitors can be seen in the UCSD Engineering Courtyard, walking slowly, heads bent and eyes focused downward, intent on reading the engravings etched on the Legacy Walk pavers. Those bluestone pavers, more than 450 to date, provide a glimpse of the people who have been touched by the Jacobs School. We often wonder about the stories behind the pavers. So we did a little investigating. Here are just a few examples:

Paver Example 1 CHARLES '84 &
SUSAN HAN '86
WHERE OUR JOURNEY BEGAN
Charles "Chuck" Han was a junior in the Jacobs School going for his degrees in computer engineering and economics. With no car available, he spent most of his free time on campus. One day at a coke machine in Revelle, he met Susan, a freshman at UCSD. They dated in libraries, cafes on campus, and spent a lot of time walking the campus grounds. They were married in 1986, the year Susan graduated from UCSD. They both believe it was destiny that brought them together, and UCSD truly is where their journey began.

Paver Example 2 QUIZ ANSWERS BURIED BELOW
CARL CHRIS RANDY
JACK KHANH LINDA
QUAN DENNIS STEF
CLASS OF 2003–04
Dennis Bollman '03 was one of the members of a study group that started when they arrived as freshman at UCSD and continued until they all graduated in 2003-04. This group studied together for almost every test, every term, and all nine of them still remain the best of friends. They decided to purchase a Legacy Walk paver to memorialize their studies at the Jacobs School. They wanted "something buried below." Quiz answers seemed totally appropriate.

Paver Example 3 JUSTIN L CHENEY
ENGINEERING WITH PRIDE
DAD, MOM & AUDRA
Lynn and Tim Cheney are proud of their son's accomplishments at UCSD and wanted to memorialize and honor his hard work. A Legacy Walk paver seemed very appropriate. Justin Cheney earned his B.S./M.S. in mechanical engineering at the Jacobs School, and he is continuing his study here as a Ph.D. student. We are proud of you too Justin!
