Faculty Honors

Sangeeta Bhatia (BioE) was recently awarded a five-year NSF Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for her research titled “Microscale Structure/Function Studies Towards Development of Engineered Liver Tissue.”

Stephan Lewellyn Smith (MAE) received a five-year CAREER award for his project titled “Flutter, Tumble and Fall: Extending Maxwell’s Problem of the Fallen Plate and Using Sports as an Educational Aid in Science and Engineering.”

Tom Bewley (MAE) has been selected as a Hellman Fellow for 2002-2003. This award will be used to support his research in the area of fluid mechanics and control theory.

André Filiatrault (SE) received the 2002 Leon S. Moisseiff Award from the American Society of Civil Engineering for his paper titled “Cyclic Analysis of Wood Shear Walls.”

Keiko Nomura (MAE) was recently awarded the 2002 Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award. This award, presented to only five UCSD faculty members each year, is the highest recognition award on campus for teaching.

Mike Bailey (MAE) received the 2002 Barbara J. and Paul D. Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award for Non-Senate Members. Bailey is a senior principal scientist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and an adjunct faculty member for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and for Computer Science and Engineering.

MAE Professor Constantine Pozrikidis, an expert in computational and theoretical fluid dynamics, recently published his sixth textbook titled A Practical Guide to Boundary Element Methods with the Software Library BEMLIB. The free accompanying software is available at http://bemlab.ucsd.edu.
