Grooming World-Class Engineers for India... and San Diego

The Jacobs School and Calit2 are leading an effort to help India improve its engineering education, while also boosting joint research. The goal: prepare and attract more Indian students to Jacobs School Ph.D. programs, and groom world-class engineering talent for California companies' R&D operations in both India and the U.S. QUALCOMM will support Jacobs School faculty who spend part of their sabbatical teaching in India to potentially dozens of classrooms via Edusat, the country's satellite for educational programming. Nearly three dozen U.S. universities have joined the program that originated last July as a partnership among the Jacobs School , Calit2, India 's Amrita University and the Indian government, with further corporate support from Microsoft and Cadence Design Systems. Dean Frieder Seible led a UCSD delegation to New Delhi in December, and Calit2 UCSD division director Ramesh Rao, met several times with Indian President (and aeronautical engineer), Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Calit2 will host a U.S.-India Summit on Education, Research & Technology on May 31, bringing together top educators, CEOs, and government officials.
