New Director at Center for Networked Systems

Amin Vahdat

One of the youngest research centers at UCSD has a young new leader. Computer science and engineering professor Amin Vahdat, 33, took over as director of the Center for Networked Systems (CNS).

In January, the industry-funded center held its twice-yearly research review, and Vahdat welcomed the center's four newest faculty members. ECE's Tara Javidi as well as CSE's Alin Deutsch,Yannis Papakonstantinou, and Tajana Simunic Rosing bring the center's faculty roster to 19.

"We have expertise from the lowest level of networking—optical, wireless—all the way up to the highest level of end-to-end network services," says Vahdat. "The center can bring all these people together and focus them on a lot of emerging opportunities."

Vahdat's own research focuses on building scalable, highly available Internet systems. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1998, and achieved tenure at Duke University in just four years. He joined the Jacobs School faculty in January 2004.Vahdat's honors include a Sloan Fellowship and an NSF CAREER Award.
