Engineers and physicians are joining forces to develop future treatments for 21st century health care through UC San Diego’s new Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM). Nanoparticle bombs to kill cancer, improved heart surgery techniques and mini-cameras for minimally invasive surgery, are now on the frontier of medical innovations with the new Institute leading the way.

“The time is right for this initiative because there are several technology developments on the horizon that will completely transform medicine,” says IEM Director Shu Chien, University Professor of Bioengineering and Medicine. “Nanoengineering, bioinformatics, genomics, regenerative medicine and dynamic imaging are all tools that we are learning to use for the advancement of health care.”

Established July 2008, IEM was officially launched with an inaugural celebration on December 12, 2008. More than 100 faculty from the Jacobs School, School of Medicine, and Skaggs School of Pharmacy are involved as members of the IEM.

IEM serves as a catalyst to bring academic and industry research teams together to work on innovations for the diagnosis and treatment of target diseases. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, and diabetes are among the focus areas of the Institute. Unique core research facilities, such as UCSD’s Human Stem Cell Core, will be available to all scientists involved in the program.

One of the aims of the IEM is to foster education of the next generation of scientists trained in using engineering techniques to advance medicine. UC San Diego attracts some of the best students in the country to obtain joint M.D.-Ph.D. degrees in medicine and engineering. To train future healthcare technologists, the Institute will integrate engineering and medical concepts in classes and labs at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels; sponsor distinguished lecture series available to the entire San Diego life sciences community; and reach out to international partners from China to the UK.

UC San Diego is one of only four universities to have both a medical school and an engineering school ranked among the nation’s top 15 graduate schools (U.S. News, 2009). UC San Diego’s newest research institute aligns programs that are rated among the nation’s best, and it will lead the way to enhance the health and well being of people by synergizing engineering and medicine and translating novel discoveries to healthcare delivery.
