Cymer Donates Equipment for Energy Research

Cymer, Inc. of San Diego has donated to UCSD six high resolution spectrometers and 10 optical tables valued at more than half a million dollars. Professor Robert J. Cattolica of the Jacobs School Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering says the spectrometers enable precise measurements of emission and absorption lines, which makes them useful in research involving the effect of lasers on various media, including plasmas. Five of the spectrometers are being set up in the Jacobs School's Center for Energy Research to be used, among other topics, for research on plasma and combustion process diagnosis. A sixth spectrometer will go to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The optical tables are extremely stable and are ideal for building optical experiments with lasers and related instruments, Cattolica said.
