Jacobs School Ranks 11th in the Country

In the annual survey of graduate programs released April 1 by U.S. News, the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering ranked 11th among 179 engineering schools, and 6th in the nation among public schools. With $138.3 million in federal, state and industry research support in FY04, the Jacobs School ranks second in the nation for research expenditures per faculty member, reflecting UCSD's leadership as a research university. The Jacobs School is the youngest engineering school among the nation's best.

All five of the School's academic departments had programs ranked in the top 20 including the Department of Bioengineering which ranks 2nd in the nation for biomedical/bioengineering. Other highly ranked disciplines include: aerospace engineering (20); civil engineering (16); computer engineering (16); electrical/ electronic/communications (18); materials engineering (30); and mechanical engineering (18).

UCSD's School of Medicine scored high marks as well, ranking 14th in the category of research-focused medical schools and 7th in the nation for primary care among 123 medical schools. Ten programs in the UCSD Social Sciences and two in the Humanities ranked in the top ten.
