Faculty Honors

ECE professor Jack Keil Wolf was named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Wolf is an expert in digital information storage and signal processing for digital recording. He is the Stephen O. Rice Professor of Magnetics and was the first chaired professor in UCSD's Center for Magnetic Recording Research.

Frieder Seible, professor of structural engineering and dean of the Jacobs School , has been appointed chairman of the California Department of Transportation's Seismic Advisory Board. Among the issues currently being addressed by the board, is the replacement of the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Seible also serves as a member of the Federal Highway Administration Peer Review Team.

Nuno Vasconcelos, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has received a 2005 CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. His project, “Weakly Supervised Recognition” is focused on the design of more automated systems to detect and recognize objects in large image and video repositories.
