Abstract
Spherical harmonic lighting has been incorporated into many real-time rendering and precomputed radiance transfer systems. It enables a fast approximation for rendering diffuse surfaces and encodes light transfer functions on object surfaces, allowing for soft shadows and inter-reflections. However, the most commonly adopted techniques use only low order spherical harmonics and assume distant environment lighting. There is currently limited support in PRT systems for area lighting, near-field illumination, or more detailed lighting and shadows from higher-order harmonics. In this work, we present a closed-form solution for converting polygonal area lights to spherical harmonics and investigate efficient computation of higher order harmonics.
