Silicon photonics is an emerging technology that is rapidly growing and the market is expected to reach approximately $1 billion by 2022. However, integrated photonics remains mysterious to a majority of undergraduate and graduate students, even in engineering fields. Today, only PhD graduates have the practical experience in integrated photonics. As silicon photonic technology becomes mature, there is a need for less specialized roles. Due to the increasing number of companies specialized in silicon photonics, several job opportunities are being created. In that context, we believe it is crucial to promote, attract, and train student engineers early in their careers. We firmly believe that is important to prepare and provide all possible educational tools to prepare the next generation of integrated photonics engineers. The aim of our project is to propose to educational institutions (universities, specialized training, etc.) a practical didactic tool introducing integrated photonics. Particularly, we propose a plug and play photonic integrated kit allowing students to experimentally analyze the basic building blocks and concepts taught in photonics classes. Moreover, to succeed in our pedagogical mission the Integrated Photonics Education Kit (IPEK) will be supplied with a suggested laboratory curriculum.
