All poster presenters are invited to attend the presentation and the reception to network with industry and faculty guests. Please plan to be available at this time!

Criteria for Judging

Student poster presentations will be evaluated on four major criteria (see Judging form) related to the students' ability to clearly communicate the significance of their work:

  • Student's oral presentation is well-prepared, concise, and provides a good synopsis of the significance of the research, results, and possible future applications (opening statement approx. 2 minutes).
  • Student's response to questions show insightful knowledge and contributes to understanding of the research.
  • Poster is well organized and visually appealing.
  • Poster communicates significance and relevance of results.

Judging Process

Departmental Best Poster prizes are selected by a panel of Jacobs School alumni and corporate partner judges.

During the first hour of the Poster Exhibit (1:30-2:30 p.m.), each student will be separately visited by the judges assigned to your poster. You will have 2 minutes to give an oral presentation of your research and poster; and 4 minutes for Q&A with the judge.

Judges will complete forms for each poster visited, and these forms will be tallied. In the case of a tie, a panel of three judges will visit semi-finalists to determine the best poster winner.

The M. Lea Rudee Outstanding Poster Award, named in honor of the Jacobs School founding Dean Lea Rudee, will be selected from among the department's best posters by a panel of our faculty. The same criteria will apply. Faculty judging takes place during the last hour of the Poster Exhibit.

The Library Best Use of the Literature Award is presented by the UC San Diego Library. Judging criteria and resources can be found at
