Andrew J. Lucas
Asst Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Biogeochemical/Physical control of phytoplankton productivity and community structure; internal waves; submesoscale physical dynamics; air/sea interactions; physical/biological interactions; autonomous vehicle development;low power wave and ocean current energy generation
Lucas is a technologist and sea-going oceanographer who develops marine measurement systems. He uses these cutting-edge observations to study atmosphere-ocean interaction, ocean ecosystem structure and function, and environmental fluid mechanics. His research establishes a framework to assess the impact of projected changes in the ocean on its small-scale dynamics.
Lucas was an assistant research oceanographer at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography before joining the UC San Diego faculty in 2017. He maintains a joint appointment with Scripps, where he earned his Ph.D.
