Development and device integration of nanostructured materials, Micro-and nano- electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), Advanced Manufacturing and Microfabrication, Nanocarbon Materials and Devices, Engineering Education and STEM Pedagogy
The central theme of Ghazinejad’s research program is to understand, synthesize, and apply advanced materials with a focus on nanostructured materials and devices. The ongoing progress in nanoscience and microfabrication has advanced micro-/nano- electromagnetically systems (MEMS/NEMS) from laboratory-based experiments to a worldwide phenomenon that is rapidly forming the basis for a broad range of technologies used in different aspects of modern life. A particular emphasis of Ghazinejad’s research is on carbon-based nanomaterials and C-MEMS technologies, which are geared toward sensing, energy storage, and biomedical devices.
In his pedagogical program, Ghazinejad applies active learning techniques to develop curricula and pedagogical models in engineering. His teaching repertoire includes engineering mechanics, design, manufacturing, and materials engineering classes. He has developed new courses on microanalysis, engineering design, and nanoengineering. Ghazinejad is actively involved in pedagogical projects focused on psychology of learning and broadening participation in engineering.
Maziar Ghazinejad joined the faculty of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego in 2018. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UC Riverside (2012) and holds M.S. degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering. Prior to his appointment at UC San Diego, he served as an assistant professor and graduate coordinator at California State University Fresno, and as a project scientist at UC Irvine. He is a recipient of the Provost’s Faculty Award from California State University Fresno, and an Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) award from the American Public Power Association for his work on manufacturing and device application of carbon nanomaterials. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Materials Research Society (MRS), American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), where he serves as a conference chair and editor.
