Submit a space request | Space request process flowchart

Engineering Department Chairs are delegated authority by the Dean’s Office to make space assignment changes within their department’s footprint if it’s an “even exchange,” meaning no group gains or loses a significant amount of space. These adjustments do not require review by the Space Committee. If the change is larger than that, or represents a net increase to a group or individual, then a formal request is required. Those requests are reviewed by the Space Committee, who makes a recommendation to the Dean for final approval.
Any transfer of space between departments also always requires a formal request and committee review.

Space Committee Aims

Evaluate space usage, review requests for space, and present recommendations to the Dean and Assistant Dean

Review space policies every 3 years and amend as needed

Perform ad hoc targeted space analyses and reviews as needed or as requested by the Dean

Review and provide feedback on the results of the Chancellor’s Fall Space Review annually

Recommend programmatic priorities for research space assignment and development of new research space to the Dean

Assist the Dean in defining the need for and scope of future research space and related support facilities.

Space Committee Purpose

The Space Committee evaluates space utilization to ensure equitable and efficient allocation aligned with research activity, faculty needs, and strategic priorities. Reviews consider occupancy levels, research productivity, programmatic growth, and compliance with university space guidelines, with reassignment or reallocation occurring as needed to optimize use and support institutional objectives.
