Dr. Larry Carter joined UC San Diego in 1994 for an opportunity to pursue his own research. Prior to joining as a faculty member in the School of Engineering, he worked as a Research Staff Member and manager at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center for nearly 20 years. Between 1996 and 2000, he served as Vice Chair and then Chair of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE).
Dr. Carter received his Ph.D. in mathematics from UC Berkeley in 1974.Trained as a mathematician, his primary focus was on improving the performance of scientific applications on workstations and supercomputers. He is an expert on compilers and computer architecture, including parallel and multi-threaded architectures, and has worked with computational scientists in a variety of disciplines.
Dr. Carter feels his greatest contributions during his time at UCSD are assisting Dean Robert Conn and others to win the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) competition, establishing Cal-IT2, and assisting with garnering support for a new CSE building.
Advice he offers to current students who want to make the most out of their experience at UCSD is to take advantage of opportunities to interact with the faculty. Go to office hours and ask what research is going on and get involved.
Since retiring nearly 20 years ago, he was employed as a consultant and is still very active in Osher's Lifelong Learning Institute (part of UCSD Extension), and continues to patron the Art of Espresso.
