K-14 Outreach

The IDEA Engineering Student Center work in partnership with student organizations affiliated with the Jacobs School of Engineering in increasing K-14 student knowledge and awareness of engineering through various outreach programs and events that they organize throughout the year.

The San Diego Science and Engineering Festival (JGSC)

This event features a week of interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and dynamic speakers to engage kids and families in science and engineering. The IDEA Student Center and the Jacobs School community (faculty & students) engage students in hands-on demos on Expo Day at Petco Park on the last Saturday of the Festival.

Enspire (TESC)

Enspire is designed to introduce approximately 400+ middle school students to university-level engineering, via lab tours and a variety of hands-on projects.

Empower HS Conference (SHPE)

This conference is hosted annually by the UC San Diego chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and involves tours, presentations, guest speakers and a social hour/lunch to introduce and excite high school students about the field of engineering and the Jacobs School of Engineering.

Envision HS Conference (SWE)

This conference is a fun-filled day to inspire and encourage approximately 200+ high school girls to pursue post-education in the field of engineering. This event is hosted annually by UC San Diego chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Seismic Outreach Program (SCSE)

Seismic Outreach is an annual program that gives the opportunity for UCSD students from all majors to reach out to local San Diego 6th grade classes through volunteering and the opportunity for younger students to learn about earthquake science and engineering. The main objective of Seismic Outreach is to develop these kids, being our next generation, into more effective communicators and more engaged citizens, and perhaps inspire them to choose engineering careers in the future.

SPLASH (TESC & JGSC)

An annual event organized by Triton Engineering Student Council and the Jacobs Graduate Student Council, with support from the Jacobs School of Engineering. Local high schoolers are invited to the UCSD campus for a day full of learning and exciting academic engagement! Our core belief is that students should enjoy learning about topics they are most passionate and interested about. We allow students to curate their day choose from a variety of classes created by our teachers. Our Splash teachers are current UCSD undergraduate and graduate students as even some department faculty. Splash Teachers pick their own topic and create their own curriculum. As a result, the classes feature material that teachers are most passionate about and what attendees find most interesting!
