San Diego, Calif., June 28 -- Miroslav Krstic, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Jacobs School, has been named Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, effective July 1, 2012.

Krstic is joining the leadership team of the Office of Research Affairs; acting as liaison to campus Organized Research Units; managing their fiscal and administrative matters, the annual call for new ORUs, and the ongoing 5-year review process.

“I am excited about working together with researchers in different disciplines across UCSD and assisting them in advancing the impact of their existing or future centers and institutes,” Krstic said. “I also look forward to fostering the inventiveness and excellence of UCSD's research scientists and postdocs, through the appointment and review process, and to assisting new faculty in their career development.”

Krstic will oversee academic research personnel matters, including postdoctoral and visiting scholars, and expansion of opportunities for early career research training and development.  He will also assume responsibility for identifying and facilitating ways to enhance the core research facilities and services infrastructure of the campus.

“Professor Krstic's reputation and experience at UC San Diego and on the national and international stage, along with his strong interest in expanding opportunities for research, will be a great asset to our campus,” said Vice Chancellor for Research Sandra Brown. “I look forward to having him join the Office of Research Affairs.”

Professor Krstic joined UC San Diego as an associate professor in 1997, after two years at the University of Maryland's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Institute for Systems Research. He was appointed full professor in 2000 and currently holds the Daniel L. Alspach Endowed Chair in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Professor Krstic founded the Cymer Center for Control Systems and Dynamics. He has co-authored nine books and 170 journal papers in control theory.  He is a Fellow of IEEE and IFAC, the first engineering recipient of the Chancellor's Associates Award for Research, and held UC Berkeley's Springer Professorship in 2007.

Krstic takes over from another mechanical and aerospace professor, George Tynan, who had held the AVC-Research position since 2007.
