Incoming Freshman
Admission to UC San Diego as a freshman does not guarantee the ability to switch into engineering and computer science majors at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Due to high demand, all engineering majors at UC San Diego are considered "selective" for incoming freshman applying for enrollment, which means additional screening procedures are in place. Admissions for all incoming students to UC San Diego is managed by the campus-wide UC San Diego admissions office which has a selective majors page.
Transfer Students
For transfer students applying to engineering majors, note that all engineering majors are selective majors, meaning that admission to UC San Diego does not guarantee admission to these majors. Admissions for all incoming transfer students to UC San Diego is managed by the campus-wide UC San Diego admissions office which has a transfer admission page.
Continuing Students: Changing Majors
Due to high demand, all engineering and computer science majors at UC San Diego are “selective,” which means additional screening procedures are in place for current non-engineering students wishing to switch into an engineering or computer science major.
Beginning with the Summer 2025 continuing student application cycle, students will be able to apply to engineering and computer science majors once per year (between Summer and Fall quarters). Note that space will be limited and acceptance to these majors is not guaranteed.
For more information about the admission process and criteria please see the UC San Diego Selective Majors Page
AI & Machine Learning Courses
The Jacobs School of Engineering created a course guide for undergraduates in all Jacobs School majors who are interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
