San Diego, Calif., Aug. 10 -- Pattern Insight announced Aug. 8 that it has come to an agreement with VMware Inc. to sell its Log Insight product, together with its team and technology.
Yuanyuan(YY) Zhou, a computer scientist at the University of California, San Diego, co-founded Pattern Insight with several members of her research team when she was on faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain. She is currently the company’s chief technology officer. She joined the faculty of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego in 2009.
Log Insight is one of her company’s core products — an analytics and log management platform that has the ability to analyze large amounts of machine-generated data in real time. It is used for operational analytics in traditional data center and cloud environments. It has the ability to discover emerging patterns and guide administrators to the root cause of problems.
VMware, a leader in virtualization and cloud computing, will help deliver the technology to a broad number of users. Pattern Insight will now focus on its other product, Code Insight, an analysis tool that helps system vendors with quality assurance.
At the Jacobs School, Zhou specializes in making computers safer and more reliable. She currently is a Qualcomm Chair Professor and an endowed chair at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology at UC San Diego.
“Fundamentally, my research is about making computer systems more reliable so they crash less; and when they do, finding intelligent ways to quickly diagnose the root cause and recover the systems quickly,” Zhou said. “When Windows crashes, it’s more of an inconvenience, but when an e-commerce site crashes it can really be a problem.”
Key investors in Pattern Insight include Venture Investors, John Lovitt and Dr. Kai Li.
