UCSD-TV Documentary on QUALCOMM's Irwin Jacobs Now Available Online and On-Air

San Diego, CA, April 30, 2004 -- On April 28, UCSD-TV began airing a 60-minute documentary called "Irwin Mark Jacobs: Pioneer of the Wireless Future." The program focuses on the QUALCOMM founder's influence on San Diego, UCSD, and the global telecommunications industry. To make the program available for viewers outside the San Diego region, the documentary is also now available on-demand as streaming video at http://rpvss.ucsd.edu:8080/ramgen/calit2/IrwinJacobsUCSDTV.rm [RealPlayer or RealOne Player required].

"Pioneer of the Wireless Future" traces Jacobs' biography from his early years growing up in Massachusetts and later studying and teaching at MIT, to his recruitment as one of the earliest engineering faculty members at UCSD in 1966. He later built Linkabit into a communications technology powerhouse that has spawned -- in one way or another -- more than 100 companies in the San Diego telecom sector. In 1985, Jacobs left Linkabit to found QUALCOMM, where he is Chairman and CEO.

The documentary was produced and sponsored by the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [Cal-(IT)²] and UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering, and based in part on a symposium they hosted last October with QUALCOMM Inc. to mark the CEO's 70th birthday. The program will air initially four times on UCSD-TV, which is available throughout most of San Diego County on the following cable channels, as well as over-the-air on UHF Channel 35: Cox San Diego (Channel 66), Cox North County (Channel 69), and Time Warner Cable (Channel 18).
