Bloomberg Connects with Jacobs School of Engineering Students at UC San Diego
San Diego, CA October 13, 2017: Engineering and computer science students visiting the Bloomberg networking event on Warren Mall on October 10 got an exciting – and taco-filled – start to Fall 2017 UC San Diego Science and Technology Career Fair.
The Bloomberg event offered UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering students opportunities for informal conversations with Bloomberg employees as well as product demos. This was part of a two-day effort in which eight senior engineers from Bloomberg came out and engaged with over 500 UC San Diego engineering students. These events included the networking event on Warren Mall, a “Search@Bloomberg” tech talk, and the UC San Diego science and technology career fair at RIMAC.

“Bloomberg is first and foremost a technology company that faces some of the same challenges to the likes of the Googles and the Facebooks,” said Ken LaPorte, the Search Infrastructure Team Lead at Bloomberg. LaPorte gave the UC San Diego tech talk. “We are the premiere tech company in the financial services industry. The massive scale of real time data and information presents a lot of technical challenges and requires innovative solutions,” he said.
Eddie Ishak, a UC San Diego computer science alumnus, is one of the senior Bloomberg employees who came to campus to talk to students.
“Students are asking the right questions,” Ishak said.
As a key member of Bloomberg’s UX team, Ishak is acutely aware that the success of his UX team depends on the skills of the engineers he works with. And that motivates him to find the very best engineers at recruiting events like this. And a good number of recent Bloomberg engineering and computer science hires have been from UC San Diego.
“UC San Diego is definitely on the map for us,” said Ishak.
Also on hand was Bloomberg recruiter Emily Parisi. She encouraged engineering students to go the Bloomberg careers website for the latest information on hiring and internships. But she also underscored the value of in-person events like the Warren Mall networking, the tech talk, and the UC San Diego science and technology career fair. Her advice for engineers attending career events:
“Make sure you come ready to explain your projects and speak to your expertise,” said Parisi.
Face time still matters, when it comes to landing an internship or a job. You never know what kind of conversation you’ll strike up or what connection you’ll make.
