Lasers, batteries and autonomy: get the latest updates at Research Expo

San Diego, CA, March 15, 2018 -- Breakthrough lasers, better batteries for electric vehicles, and autonomous robots are on the docket for the faculty tech-talks at the 37th annual Jacobs School of Engineering Research Expo at the University of California San Diego. The 15-minute TED-style talks round out a day of discovery, with more than 200 graduate students from across the engineering disciplines presenting their research in person at the afternoon poster session.

This year, electrical and computer engineering professor Boubacar Kante, whose topological laser capable of propagating light in any shape was named a Physics World top 10 Breakthrough of 2017, will kick off the faculty talks with insight into his research and its industry relevance.
Shirley Meng, director of the UC San Diego Sustainable Power and Energy Center, will discuss her work to develop high performance batteries to power electric cars and a green energy grid. Meng will describe how her lab is advancing solutions to challenges with energy generation, storage and power management.
Rounding out the faculty talks is Henrik Christensen, executive director of the Contextual Robotics Institute, and lead editor of the U.S. Robotics Roadmap. Christensen will expound on several campus initiatives in autonomy he’s spearheading, including developing autonomous mail delivery carts, opening a new aerodrome for testing drones, and plans to turn campus into a living lab for autonomous vehicles.
Graduate students from bioengineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, nanoengineering and structural engineering will be showcasing their latest research, which can be found here in abstract form.
