Streaming Video from Information Theory and Applications Workshop
San Diego, CA, February 13, 2006 -- Last week the UCSD Division of Calit2 hosted the inaugural workshop of its new Information Theory and Applications (ITA) Center. It was organized by the center's newly-appointed director, Alon Orlitsky, who holds a joint appointment in ECE and CSE. Two Jacobs School faculty members (Bioengineering's Bernhard Palsson and CSE's Pavel Pevzner) delivered tutorials on the role of information theory in the life sciences, which was also the topic of the keynote address by UC Berkeley's Richard Karp (on decoding the information in genomes and protein networks). Calit2 director Larry Smarr and UCSD Division director Ramesh Rao -- who hold appointments in CSE and ECE, respectively -- spoke at the inaugural ceremony, as did Orlitsky, ECE professor Jack Wolf, and QUALCOMM founder Irwin Jacobs.
