University of California, San Diego Engineering, Technology and Computer Sciences Ranked 9th in the World

February 08, 2007 – The University of California, San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering is the 9th best in the world for engineering/technology and computer sciences, according to an academic ranking of the top 100 world universities published online this month by the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The official  release date for the ranking is February 15, 2007. 

The Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) in engineering are based on academic and research performance. Indicators considered include: number of researchers highly cited for their work in engineering, computer science and materials science; articles indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded; percentage of articles by faculty published in top-tier journals; and total engineering-related research expenditures.

A total 1000 international institutions were scanned, and the top 106 engineering institutions were ranked. All of the top 10 universities for engineering/technology and the computer sciences are based in the United States:

                    1   Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 
                    2   Stanford University 
                    3   University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
                    3   University of Michigan Ann Arbor
                    5   University of California Berkeley 
                    6   Pennsylvania State University - University Park 
                    7   Georgia Institute of Technology 
                    8   University of Texas Austin 
                    9   University of California San Diego 
                   10   Purdue University West Lafayette

This is the first year the ARWU ranked by subject fields. Other fields in which UC San Diego is ranked among the world’s elite universities include: Life and Agriculture Sciences (14th); the Natural Sciences and Mathematics (19th); Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy (23rd); and the Social Sciences (25th). In 2006, UC San Diego was ranked 13th among the world’s top 1,000 universities.
