COSMOS Advisory Board Comes to UC San Diego
San Diego, CA, August 3, 2010 -- The UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering hosted 15 members of the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS) Statewide Advisory Board on July 29-30, 2010. Advisory Board members who visited the campus included former California First Lady and outgoing Chair of the COSMOS Advisory Board, Gayle Wilson; and Francisco Ayala, Ph.D., National Medal of Science awardee.

More than 160 high school students are attending COSMOS at UCSD this summer. During the four-week residential program, COSMOS students – who excel in science, technology, math and engineering – attend classes taught by UCSD faculty. Classes are designed to inspire students and enhance their interests in science and technology.
UCSD COSMOS, which is supported by the Jacobs School of Engineering, hosted a reception for the Advisory Board members, UCSD faculty, staff, COSMOS students and alumni on Thursday, July 29th, in the Jacobs Hall lobby. On Friday, July 30th, board members toured the UCSD COSMOS classrooms in the Warren College campus area in the morning. Board members concluded their visit after a luncheon with UCSD COSMOS students at Middle Earth in the Eleanor Roosevelt Residential Hall area.
COSMOS at UCSD began in 2005 and joins three other UC campuses that support COSMOS programs: UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Cruz. COSMOS is managed by the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) in the Education Partnerships Department.
