Media Invited to Explore New Laboratories for Structural and NanoEngineering, Medical Devices and Visual Arts
San Diego, Calif., September 10, 2012 – The University of California, San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering is opening its doors Friday, Sept. 14, to media interested in exploring our newest research facility, the Structural and Materials Engineering Building. The mixed use building includes the Composite Aviation Safety Center, medical devices labs and laboratories devoted to engineering on the nanoscale for biomedicine and energy research, and Visual Arts labs, studios and a gallery.
Researchers and graduate students will be available for interviews with media.

Who: Remarks by Pradeep K. Khosla, Chancellor; Frieder Seible, Dean, Jacobs School; Nathan Fletcher, California State Assembly Member; Seth Lerer, Dean, Arts & Humanities; Karl Beucke, President, Bauhaus-University Weimar.
Exclusive essay: Noted science fiction author David Brin, a UC San Diego alumnus (Ph.D. ’81), will offer his vision on “New Modernism: Blending Engineering, Art and the Human Imagination.”
Dancing warehouse lift: An industrial warehouse lift will dance with movements inspired by low rider cars. This is “Hi ‘n’ Lo,” a performance presented by Visual Arts Professor Ruben Ortiz-Torres.
Video Opportunities
Drone wings and more – Composite Aviation Safety Center, with two Predator drone wings, a private jet fuselage and a satellite radio antenna. A professor and two grad students will be available to explain the projects.
Heart Pump for Kids – Center for Medical Device and Instrumentation with simulations of blood flow in children with heart defects and the only FDA-approved cardiac pump for children who can't be fitted with adult-sized devices. Full story here. Pictures of the project here.
Screen Printed Nanotechnology – Nanoengineering labs, with a demonstration of a thick-film screen printer that can create very small biofuel cells that use sewage, sweat and other liquids to power batteries. Watch video of the process.
NanoMacroMega – An exhibit that includes, among other art/engineering works, photographic prints by Anya Gallaccio of Visual Arts made by using an electron microscope to scan nano and micro particles.
