With $188 million in federal, state and industry research support in FY18, the Jacobs School of Engineering ranks 13th overall, and third among all public engineering schools, for research expenditures per faculty member, reflecting UC San Diego's leadership as a research university. Bioengineering
The Department of Bioengineering ranks 5th in the nation for biomedical/bioengineering (US News and World Report Ranking of Best Engineering Schools, published March 2019). Bioengineering has ranked among the top four programs in the nation every year for more than a decade.

Computer Science and Engineering
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) ranks 11th in computer systems; 13th in programming language; 14th in computer science theory; and #16 in the nation overall. (US News and World Report Ranking of Best Engineering Schools, published March 2018).

Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) ranks 13th for its programs in electrical / electronic / communications engineering (US News and World Report Ranking of Best Engineering Schools, published March 2019).

Computer Engineering
The Jacobs School ranks 12th in computer engineering, a program offered in both the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). (US News and World Report Ranking of Best Engineering Schools, published March 2019).

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
