UC San Diego Engineering Dean Albert P. Pisano Elected to European Academy of Sciences and Arts

April 8, 2024: Albert P. Pisano, Dean of the University of California San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and Special Adviser to the Chancellor has been elected a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. The induction ceremony was held in Salzburg, Austria on 5 April 2024.

“I am honored by the growing recognition among the European community of the positive impacts of my work as Dean, and of the collective work of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering overall,” said Pisano. “Here at the Jacobs School, we have increased our collaborative efforts on the international scale, including initiatives in Europe around future wireless.”

For example, Pisano helped to organize forward-looking events in both Stockholm and Glasgow that are part of the Jacobs School’s larger efforts to build positive momentum for collaborative research infrastructure that accelerates innovation in future wireless technologies. These events connected industry, academia and government officials around challenges and opportunities for innovation in the development of future wireless technologies. More context is available in an article that Pisano published in Issues in Science and Technology entitled “A More Effective Innovation Practice.”

The European Academy of Sciences and Arts is an international, non-governmental, and non-profit organization committed to promoting scientific and societal progress. Members are elected for their outstanding achievements in science, engineering, arts and governance.

“It is no surprise that wireless is one of our breakout ventures in Europe," said Pisano. “The Jacobs School is a powerhouse in wireless. We are leveraging this strength to build and deepen collaborative relationships with a number of wireless companies, universities and public-sector entities that have strong presences in Europe.”

In addition to future wireless, Jacobs School of Engineering research strengths extend to many other areas that are of great interest and relevance to European colleagues.

“Here at the Jacobs School, we are working to move the needle in a variety of areas that are of great relevance in Europe,” said Pisano.

These areas include efforts to build carbon-negative biomanufacturing capacities; efforts to pivot healthcare from acute care to preventive care; and efforts to solve the toughest challenges in fusion engineering.
