Nathan J. Delson

Teaching Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering


Robotics, actuator design and control, mechatronics, medical devices, and project-based learning.

Delson’s engineering research is in design with applications in the areas of robotics, simulators for medical training, and actuator design for haptics. As a Teaching Professor at UCSD he introduced a freshmen hands-on design course, expanded the capstone design course, and started a course on product design and entrepreneurship. His research in engineering education includes methods to increase student motivation, creativity, teamwork, and integration of theory into design projects. He has co-developed a software application that uses freehand sketching on touchscreens to improve students’ spatial visualization abilities and their persistence.

Capsule Bio:

Nathan Delson received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He started his academic career at Yale University, where he was Director of the Engineering Design Studio. In 1999 Dr. Delson returned to his alma mater, UC San Diego, where he currently is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Delson was the founding faculty director of the EnVision Arts and Engineering Maker Studio (2016-2019). He has co-founded two companies and holds over 10 patents. He is a faculty affiliate of the UC San Diego Design Lab.
