Machine learning, natural language processing, machine learning for healthcare

Professor Xie’s research interests mainly lie in machine learning inspired by humans’ learning skills (especially classroom learning skills), such as learning by passing tests, interleaving learning, learning by self-explanation, small-group learning, learning by teaching, learning by ignoring, etc., and their applications in healthcare.

Capsule Bio:

Pengtao Xie is an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego. He received his PhD from the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University in 2018. His research interests mainly lie in machine learning inspired by humans’ learning skills (especially classroom learning skills), such as learning by passing tests, interleaving learning, learning by self-explanation, small-group learning, learning by teaching, learning by ignoring, etc., and their applications in healthcare. His research outcomes have been adopted by medical device companies, medical imaging centers, hospitals, etc. and have been published at top-tier artificial intelligence conferences and journals including JMLR, ICML, NeurIPS, ACL, ICCV, etc.

Xie serves as area chair for AAAI 2021, ICML 2021, NeurIPS 2021, CVPR 2021, etc. Before joining UC San Diego, he was an associate vice president in Petuum Inc and has led the research and development of AI solutions for healthcare and manufacturing and deployed several products in cement factories, steel factories, hospitals, etc. His PhD thesis was selected as a finalist (top 5) for the AMIA Doctoral Dissertation Award. He is the recipient of the Amazon AWS Research Award, Tencent AI-Lab Faculty Award, Tencent WeChat Faculty Award, the Innovator Award presented by the Pittsburgh Business Times, the Siebel Scholars award, and the Goldman Sachs Global Leader Scholarship. He received his MS from Tsinghua University and BS from Sichuan University.
