Dean's Message

Student success is a 12-month project

August 2022

Albert P. Pisano

As we fly through August, I'm hitting pause to say:

"Thank you to everyone in the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering community whose summer includes efforts to help our students succeed and develop into creative, well-rounded engineers and computer scientists."

That's it. That's the message.

Well, almost. The formal and informal efforts and summer programs are too numerous to mention in totality, but include school-wide programs for incoming first-year and transfer students run by our IDEA Engineering Student Center; several NSF-funded research experiences for undergraduate programs; our Enlace binational summer research program; and many wonderful department-focused programs. Faculty across the Jacobs School are teaching and inspiring high-school students through the COSMOS program. We also have a problem-solving course for high school students and teachers taught in our EnVision Arts and Engineering Maker Studio.

Nearly all our faculty bring individual undergraduate students into their labs, leading to many inspiring, life-changing experiences. Our industry and public-sector partners create career-shaping internships and summer jobs.

I'm deeply grateful to be the Dean of a School that is jam-packed with faculty, staff, public- and private- sector partners, and friends whose creativity and passion for student success changes lives, everyday. (Stay tuned for a few exciting announcements in this area, including one led by Electrical and Computer Engineering department chair Bill Lin.)

When I look at our campus' breathtaking $1.64 billion dollar research funding number, I see countless professors and research labs all across the Jacobs School and the entire campus who are doing the noble work of linking research with education, for the benefit of our students.

Every single person at the Jacobs School and across campus has a direct or indirect hand in the success of our students. To everyone, thank you. And I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the summer.
