0. Design for Environment - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Cisco considers Design for Environment as a key aspect of its corporate values. The Product Stewardship Program is seeking a team of 1-3 interns to develop a set of environmental performance metrics and establish best practices for continuous improvement of future design and manufacturing practices, using product life-cycle assessment and environmental assessment techniques. Environmental considerations such as reduction of hazardous substance, material conservation, recyclability and energy efficiency need to be incorporated into the design of products, development processes, and technical/management systems. The interns will be exposed to a variety of product design and environmental subject areas, cost-benefit analysis, and eco-design techniques; learn about the opportunities and challenges facing companies as a result of regulatory and voluntary environmental initiatives; have the opportunity to interact with engineers and other stakeholders; and gain valuable experience researching and effectively communicating environmental and technical information. Qualifications and Requirements for Application: The interns should be seniors or graduate students. A team with mixed background in environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering with knowledge of environmental LCA, eco-design and green material, energy efficiency optimization and engineering economics such as cost-benefit optimization and risk assessment is desirable. ** This internship is in San Jose. Students will be expected to make their own housing and travel arrangements. **

0. Performance Analysis and Design Improvement - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
The project will require the team to characterize and analyze performance parameters of various of Gen-Probes instruments, such as incubators and mixers; and make recommendations for improvements in design and/or use. 0. Innovative training of construction workers to use chemical anchor systems without written language - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
This project is co-sponsored by TANNER AG. TANNER is one of the leading companies for professional technical documentation, generating product catalogues and implementing sophisticated information management systems. 200 employees work for the company in ten locations across Germany and also in Vietnam. TANNER's headquarters are in Lindau, Germany.

Creating effective instruction manuals for construction tools in many languages geared to an audience with diverse literacy skills and social customs is extremely challenging. The team is charged to develop technical instructions for chemical anchor products used by workers on construction sites worldwide. Their goal will be to communicate the main product features, steps for installation and handling in a mode independent of written language. Start July 1st in Kaufering, Germany, and spend 5-6 weeks training at Hilti on the chemical anchoring products which will be used as the model for instruction. Special training will be given by Tanner AG, a leader in technical documentation, on their system of technical description and documentation. Team will draft an instructional concept by the end of this period. Testing and validation of the concept will take place in August at several construction sites in the US. Revision of the concept, presentation of results, and recommendations for further development to be given in September to Hilti and Tanner executives via videoconference from San Diego or Tulsa, OK (Hilti US HQ). A senior Hilti engineering manager will work with students during this final phase.

Project requires 1 structural engineer student, 1 graphic designer and 1 student versed in human-machine interface and ergonomics. Senior or graduate students are preferred.

Functional analysis, basic understanding of work on construction sites desired. Applicants MUST have valid passport. Opportunity for personal travel in Europe prior to the beginning of the internship will be possible. Hilti will provide transportation and housing.
