NUVVE NUVVE
NUVVE's proprietary "Vehicle to Grid" or "V2G" Aggregation solution transforms electric vehicles from simple loads on the electric grid into dispatchable energy storage resources by enabling the vehicle to send excess energy stored in its battery back to the grid upon request. The aggregation of hundreds of electric vehicles allows Nuvve to participate in ancillary service markets with power capacity comparable to traditional generators. 1. Session Service TIP Project - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Bentley Systems is looking for bright motivated software developers to work on an exciting project in our office located in our San Diego office. If you love software development and have a passion for creating the software of the future - this is the place for you!

Project Details We have one main project as the ultimate goal; but also, three smaller projects which should completed as the interns learn the skills needed to do the main one.

Main Project The main project is called "Session Service" with the aim to establish an "ambient authorization content for all AssetWise activities".   In essence it is a way to get user identity tokens from OpenID Connect service (such and Google or Facebook), combine those with customer "context information" [basically a collection of services and repositories] and manage its lifetime.   The value to Bentley is that it simplifies authorization by providing a centralized share service that can be used to do the authorization. It extents OpenID Connect; it does not compete with it.   For this to work we need very scalable way to manage those session. A centralized leader-based system in not going to work. So the interesting and challenging part to this project is to develop a consensus based solution. The solution should be Byzantine Fault Tolerant. Blockchain is a well-known one but that is too costly to run,  HashGraph looks really promising but there is a patent on that. So to find an implement a consensus based model to get global salability is the main challenge.   To understand a little more about session management you could take a look at the following external source: • Continuous Authentication and Distribution Session Management: https://youtu.be/4ZkJmZKeNkc • And this blog on sessions in OIDC: https://medium.com/@robert.broeckelmann/openid-connect-logout-eccc73df758f Training Projects We have three training projects to complete first. Their collective functionality covers all aspects of the skills and technology needed for the final one. Although these are not customer facing products they will be very useful in our internal operations and if completed successfully, will be widely visible. The first is a simple FileStorage service, the next a StarRating service and the third a Thesaurus. The third uses both FileStorage and StarRating service as independent microservices.

1. KubeKit TIP Team - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Join a growing team that has for nearly 20 years been building an open source framework to automate the parallel installation and deployment of operating systems and clustered applications - stacki.com.

Project: This summer's project will be to enable and measure the effectiveness of Calico network policy to provide:

Host endpoint protection on bare metal hosts within a Stacki environment. Kubernetes integration with the TD kubernetes configurator for ingress and egress. Validation of host to container NetworkPolicy.

Background: Stacki is a bare-metal installation mechanism from power-on to ping and a prompt. Network policy is enforced with iptables. Calico allows for a higher abstraction of network policy for host endpoints (bare metal NICs) and for service endpoints in containers managed by Kubernetes. We would like to evaluate the efficacy of using Calico to secure host endpoints at the bare metal level and for use in a Kubernetes cluster. The current network policy for KubeKit by Teradata is flannel. We need to understand at what level Calico can and should be used to provide network policy on a Stacki cluster with Kubernetes.

You will need to:

Become familiar with the installation of a base Stacki install. Create a "cart" for the deployment of Calico for host endpoints. Evaluate KubeKit deployment with Calico as the Network Policy API.

Stretch Goal: 1. Evaluate Linkerd, Instio and others. 2. Create/deploy a service mesh cart dependent on 1.

Required Skills:

Knowledge of Linux
Knowledge of Networking
Passion for automation
Interest in working with physical hardware
Interest in working with Kubernetes

Preferred Skills:

Python experience is preferred.
Some exposure to Kubernetes.
Basic HTML editing skills.

1. Stacki Internship- TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Join a growing team that has for nearly 20 years been building an open source framework to automate the parallel installation and deployment of operating systems and clustered applications - stacki.com.

Project: This summer's project will be to develop a process to automatically configure and map an entire datacenter of unknown hardware on the fly, and to integrate that process into Stacki.

Background: Server-grade hardware contains a network interface which allows access to an onboard microprocessor.  This controller, called the BMC, has information about the rest of the machine as well as the ability to access certain functionality of the machine (such as powering on/off).

By querying the BMC we may understand the rest of the server's connectivity and capabilities, which would allow us to completely configure it remotely and automatically.  When this process is automated, you could deploy an entire rack (or an entire room) full of servers while starting with zero knowledge about the hardware other than it is plugged in.  As a stretch goal, once this mapping is completed, the next task is extending Stacki to be able to map a given host to a set of ports on one or more network switches.

Required Skills:

Knowledge of Linux

Knowledge of Networking

Passion for automation

Interest in working with physical hardware

Preferred Skills:

Python experience is preferred but if you don't know Python by the start of summer, you will by the end!

1. Capsules Project Overview - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Additive manufacturing (AM) describes a host of fabrication technologies wherein a digital set of design and processing instructions are fed to a system that builds objects in a layer-by-layer fashion. Here at LLNL, we specialize in developing and improving novel AM systems that can fabricate architected materials with novel properties. Interns will work in a collaborative work environment and interface with both experimental and modeling experts that drive this technology forward. For the capsules project, interns will focus on designing and production of microcapsules, either through microfluidic manufacturing technique, or other advanced manufacturing techniques. The final materials typically have a core-shell structure. The core is the chemical that reacts with CO2, behaves as display (liquid crystal), or performs its designed function (cell). The shell is the material that isolates and protects the core. Interns may help on development of new manufacturing tools for mass production that can be commercialized.

Seeking 2-3 students from: Mechanical engineering, materials engineering, polymer science. Undergrad or Grad.

Required Skills:

Students should pay close attention to detail and follow precise instructions.
Experience with microfluidics and course work in fluid dynamics is an added benefit.

1. Modeling for Prediction to Modeling for Understand - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Whether it’s Chess, Go, or Jeopardy, artificial intelligence approaches are seemingly approaching super human capabilities. Even with this progress, however, AI approaches are not able to teach a human how to succeed at any of these games. This is because AI is not able to self-reflect on its decisions nor is it able to be held accountable. The goal of the project is to build techniques and methods to add introspective capabilities to AI with the goal of not making AI accountable and explainable. These range from simple debugger-like developer tools over new algorithms to log and inspect training and decision making to new explainable AI methods.

Seeking 2-3 Students from: Data Science, Computer Science with specialization in machine learning, Electrical Engineering with a specialization in information theory. Physicist with programming skills, curiosity in machine learning and a specialization in dynamical systems
