1. Git 4 Enterprise Documents

Over the past few years we saw Git becoming the de-factor standard for source control management. We also saw a trend emerging where developers use markdown files, managed within Git, for important product documentation such as conceptual design, implementation document and user guides. These types of product documents were typically managed in an enterprise document management system which allows for additional control such as distribution management, records management, longevity controls and erasure. Not to mention access to these documents by non-developer and customers who might not have access to the Git repository; or feel comfortable navigating those types of developer centric application.

So the problem arises; How can we let developers document the product using Git and Markdown while still having those documents controlled by, and available to, the Enterprise Document Management System.

High level requirement:

- Developer must be able to add, change and delete technical documents within git without needing any access (or be connected to) the Document Management System

- On commit of the changed to the centralized Git repo, a process should be triggered that: 1) Creates a Pdf document of the content and 2) publish it to the Document Management System

- Any pictures in the git repository related to the markdown should be available in the pdf document

- The application doing the monitoring and rendering should run in a container within Kubernetes

Required Skills:

- Team Player

- Good knowledge of object oriented programming

- Good communication skills

Preferred Skills:

Will teach you all the technology specific skills. If you already know this wonderful, if you don’t, know problem.

Skills that will be acquired before and during the project: There will be some skills everyone should learn and then some more specialized ones depending one who will do the services vs the presentation part of the project.

1. Deep Learning for RT-NAD Spectrum Identification

The project is to robustly identify time and spacially varying peaks on the spectrums of a NIF diagnostic using cutting edge machine learning/deep learning classification techniques. The identified peaks are used to create a spherical map of the NIF target chamber's neutron yield, which informs the scientists on how symmetric the implosion at NIF was. There are 48 different diagnostics placed around the target chamber that generate spectra every few minutes, which leads to an extremely large amount of data; a perfect opportunity to leverage the large data requirements of deep learning.

1. Two-Photon Lithography

Two-photon lithography (TPL) is a 3-D printing technique based on nonlinear two-photon absorption to solidify sub-micron features sized below the diffraction limit. Onsite at LLNL we have developed a parallel TPL system with the printing throughput significantly higher than that of existing TPL systems based on serial scanning. With this new capability of projection lithography we not only increase the speed but also have degrees of freedom in printing free-form features, producing the complex geometries that cannot be realized by conventional technologies. This can help manufacturing new classes of metamaterials with mechanical and structural properties unachievable before. To further investigate this, we are in need of a student intern to help with designing and characterizing microstructures and metamaterials printed by our new TPL system.

Required Skills:

  • 3-D CAD design (Autodesk Inventor prefered)

1. Computational design of meta-mat. using reduced order models

Computational design of meta-material is traditionally done either using homogenization technique with infinitely periodic boundary condition or simple beam approach. The homogenization approach suffers from the violation of infinite periodic boundary condition, while the beam approach fails to capture accurate stress values at joints. The goal of this project is to develop reduced order model based computational design of meta-material that enables an accurate stress computation at the joints and does not rely on infinitely periodic boundary condition.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Nidra - Sleep coaching app

How ASH can fix the sleep problem

Sleep is important. 1 in 3 Americans isn’t getting enough sleep. This is an expensive problem. Tired people are less productive and make more mistakes. A poor night’s sleep can lead to deadly consequences on the road. Good quality sleep has been linked to lower incidences of cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Medication only provides short term relief and the type of sleep medication induces is not high-quality sleep.

ASH has developed a novel approach to common sleep problems using a set of effective evidence-based techniques based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Our techniques use app and wearable device support tailored to the user’s specific sleep patterns designed to reinforce good sleep behaviors while reducing or eliminating poor sleep behaviors.   The 5-week program utilizes a combination of short actionable articles, engaging interactive activities and thoughtful, well-timed notifications to promote lasting behavior changes.

The team we’d like to put in place would be in charge of developing an initial version of this app for the iPhone and the Apple Watch, using the watch as a sleep and activity sensor and the app as a mean to deliver the techniques we’ve developed for the users to improve their sleep.

What the team looks like: 1-2 mobile developers + 1 designer working very closely together under the guidance of the clinical product manager who developed the idea and details of the program. Description of Projects

**Please note - all students will apply to "Mechanical Design Engineering Interns" position. Intern teams and specific projects from the 3 listed below will be assigned after all interviews have been conducted.**

1) Improving Equipment Health with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

This is an exploratory project to assess the viability of low-cost IIoT sensors and subsystem models in support of improved maintenance and operational intelligence. Industry 4.0 has introduced a wide range of low-cost sensors along with different mechanisms to aggregate information from those sensors. A low-cost targeted solution would provide Solar with additional revenue streams and provide our customers with more information to optimally operate and maintain their packages. This solution should also be extensible enough to facilitate station-level implementations. Additionally, we want to predict required maintenance activities to prevent unplanned shutdowns and detect abnormal operation before costly damage occurs. This project will implement new sensor inputs and combine these inputs with data models such that they can be used to predict the life of key subsystem components and to monitor turbine health in real time.

2) Package Maintenance Grating – Structural Analysis and Standardization

Solar Turbines’ number one priority is safety. Safe access for Solar personnel and Solar’s customers up to and into Solar’s gas turbine packages is critical for routine maintenance activities and major overhauls. This is accomplished by installing maintenance grating platforms in and around the gas turbine package. The goal of this team is to familiarize themselves with Solar’s current maintenance grating offerings, research the latest industry safety standards, investigate alternate materials and processes for creating this grating and associated supports, perform structural analysis (FEA) on new design proposals, draft design guidelines for standardization of these maintenance gratings, and fabricate and test these designs as proofs of concept.

3) Drivetrain Alignment Calculation Tool Optimization

Precision alignment of rotating equipment is critical to the successful operation of the equipment. Customers require drivetrain alignment calculations and drawings from Solar Turbines on >95% of projects. These calculations vary in complexity depending on the drivetrain configuration required by the customer. The primary goals for this team would be to update the drivetrain alignment calculation process by improving the existing tool user interface using VBA coding, creating the ability to handle a larger variety of drivetrain configurations, and adding capabilities to enhance the alignment drawing generation process in Solar’s 3D CAD modeling environment.
