The task is to define a design concept for an electrical plug system feasible for handheld electrical equipment in underground mining applications. This new plug system will expand the level of utilization compared to an existing Hilti system solution. The first step is to attain in-depth technological understanding of the available plug systems on the market, with focus on the US and Canada, with regard to application range, flexibility, approval requirements and handling. In the next step different concepts should be identified and evaluated by the utilization and testing of functional samples. Basic requirements are an easy handling of the plug connection without a tool, robustness in a mining environment and sufficient explosion protection for American and other ATEX mining markets. Two video tools are under consideration: VQM and SSIM. The students will first calibrate and evaluate the performance of the two against subjective video test for all type of content. Also the students will develop tools to compare DVB-h and MFLO quality. The tool will have ability to generate alarms for insufficient quality, recording of corresponding logs, as well as the video clip at the time of problem occurrence. Over the next few years, SDG&E will replace every mechanical electric meter with a digital meter and communication infrastructure. The project is called Smart Meter, and refers to a network of automated gas and electric meters and/or modules connected to communications equipment. Smart Metering allows for two-way communication between the utility and the customer premises. There is a technical potential and economic impact of using the existing idle capacity of the U.S. electric power infrastructure in conjunction with the emerging plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology to meet the majority of the daily energy needs of the U.S.
This project focuses on a conceptual design to integrate PHEV into the Smart Meter system. Areas of investigation in this project will include: Means of measuring PHEV charging from and discharging to the grid; Battery discharging must be governed by user preference; Identify candidate vehicle manufacturer(s); Smart Meter must recognize the vehicle (vehicle identification); Battery charging may be deferred to low-cost energy prices (off-peak); Conceptual design must use the Smart Meter Home Area Network; Leverage other SDG&E intellectual properties (last year's Intern project).

Vibration information is useful in determining the health of turbo-machinery. The project will be a blend of analysis and implementation, including hands-on development work using OO principles and current industry standard processes for software development. 0. Evaluation of methodologies to be employed under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Under the UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol, developed (Annex 1) countries have a commitment to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 5% below 1990 levels by 2012. One way these reductions can be achieved is by investing in GHG emissions reduction projects in developing (non-Annex 1) countries to obtain Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs), which an Annex 1 country can use towards its GHG emissions reduction commitment to the UN. Such projects must be executed according to a methodology submitted to and approved by the UN CDM Executive Board. There are currently 126 approved methodologies of which 29 have potential to employ Solar's products. 22 additional methodolgies are under consideration for approval. The primary objective of this project is to evaluate approved CDM methodologies to determine which of Solar's products are best suited to deployment under each methodology. For each methodology under which Solar's products might be advantageously employed, the following need to be produced:
(1)Quantitative estimate of the potential GHG emissions reductions (annual tons CO2 equivalent) for the Solar products that best fit the methodology; (2)List of critical criteria which a project must exhibit for Solar's products to fit the methodology; (3)Geographical analysis of where in the world such projects would likely be found; (4)Changes to the methodology that might improve applicability of Solar's products; (5)Some type of communication (white paper, PowerPoint presentation, etc) for the sales force and external project developers that will enable them to identify GHG emissions reduction projects with the best potential to employ Solar's products.

What is the rate of new information production each year? Who produces the greatest amounts of information annually? Individuals? Enterprises? Public organizations? And how does growth in North America compare with information growth in other geographies, markets, and people globally?
To answer these questions and others, a new How Much Information? (HMI) research program is underway. An updated and expanded study of information growth, conducted by a multi-disciplinary, multi-university team supported by corporate and foundation sponsorship, will complete an update of the 2003 Berkeley report by the end of the year. The 2008 report will be the first in a three-year research program, sponsored by seven companies, AT&T, Cisco, IBM, LSI, Oracle, Seagate and the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), and spanning three research universities, UC San Diego, MIT and UC Berkeley.
The HMI Lab will focus on building four reference data sets for analysis and visualization of data classification, data storage, data processing, network flow, and database applications. Test data sets will be requested from HMI? sponsors. The Lab will also conduct its own experiments to generate test data.

The Intercasting Internship Project offers candidates the opportunity to research, design, and implement a mobile instant messaging system that could be incorporated into our ANTHEM Social Networking platform. This project consists of developing both a client and server and requires supporting basic instant messaging and presence features from within a mobile context. Ideal candidates have experience programming with high level languages such as Java or Perl, fundamental knowledge of TCP/IP networking, and great communication and team skills. Additionally, ideal candidates will be passionate about mobile technologies, and will demonstrate a desire to learn and take initiative in a fast-paced, start up environment. Through this internship you can expect to be exposed to a number of different technologies and protocols including (but not limited to); Linux, Apache, Perl, J2SE, SIP/Simple, OMA IMPS, XMPP/Jabber, SMPP, J2ME, and BREW.
Intercasting is looking for two interns who are Computer Science majors and/or who have software engineering backgrounds. Seniors and graduate students are preferred. All applicants must be eligible to work in the US.
0. Motion Platforms and Dispensing Technologies - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
2 interns will be selected for this project to work with senior engineers to design, build, and test ultra low-cost x, y, z motion platforms and dispensing technologies. These will be used as building blocks for future instrument developments.
Essential Functions: Prototype and assemble dispenser and translation motion test platforms; perform validation testing on promising dispenser and motion technologies; interface with vendors to obtain materials/products for testing.
Project Deliverables: Functioning benchtop prototypes of two or three design options; report summarizing test results along with pros/cons of each design.
Education Requirements: At least a third year student working towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience Requirements: Knowledge of ANSI drawing standards; knowledge of basic machine shop capabilities; hands-on experience with motorized motion applications; well versed in gathering and presenting test/experiment data; SolidWorks experience a plus.

Project Scope: Bandwidth Analysis, Modeling and Simulation; Configuration Management and Data Management for Network Configuration; Evaluation, Selection, Development/Configuration, and Test of Network Engineering Tools. Project Description: Task 1 - Bandwidth Analysis, Modeling and Simulation: Planning, analyzing, designing, developing analytical and statistical methodology to assess and measure bandwidth requirement associated with various Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) applications on the network. Familiarity or ability to quickly learn network analysis/simulation tools such as OpNet Modeler/ACE, NetViz, Visio, NS2, will be a plus. Experience with Excel programming using Visual Basic will also be desired. Task 2 - Configuration Management and Data Management for Network Configuration: Support the network engineering team with reviewing CM/DM processes and procedures to support documentation, peer review, PCR, ECPs, and delivery of Network and Communications configuration products and services following the established CM/DM processes. Ability to research and leverage industry best practice like Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) configuration management and change management. Task 3 - Evaluation, Selection, Development/Configuration, and Test of Network Engineering Tools: Evaluate, develop, and test various network engineering tools to measure network performance, automate the provisioning and verification of network configurations. Familiarity with scripting tools like TCL/TK, Excel programming, C++ programming. Experience with network performance tools such as Smartbits, IXChariot, Agilent Network Advisor as plus. 0. Development and Update of Architectural and Physical Diagrams for a C4ISR System of Systems Design - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
A System of Systems is a collection of task-oriented or dedicated systems that pool their resources and capabilities together to obtain a new, more complex, 'system' which offers increased functionality and performance than simply the sum of the constituent systems. The team is expected to continue to the development of the existing physical design of a modern Command, Control, Computers, Communications, and Information (C4I) and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) system of systems. This development entails the identification of equipment locations physically within a platform or site, identifying how each piece of equipment is connected to every other piece of equipment, and relating the physical information to program-defined part numbers and configuration items. Due to the complexity of the design, the team will investigate new ways to extract needed information from the design database in various reports required by the program engineers. In addition, the team will explore different ways of representing the system architecture using standard Department of Defense (DoD) Architecture Framework (DoDAF) views that can then be related to the existing physical design. The ultimate goal will be to develop a means of linking high level system requirements stored within one database to design elements developed and stored within a separate design database, allowing for the complete traceability of requirements to all levels of design. Desired end results and deliverables are:
1. Complete physical drawings for each platform and site on the program including: site layouts, equipment layouts, equipment cabinet configurations, physical interfaces between each piece of equipment including connector and cabling detail, and equipment identified by configuration number and part number. All drawings should be capable of being extracted from the NetViz design tool in standard formats acceptable for inclusion in documentation and presentation materials.
2. Preliminary Bills of Materials (BOMs) auto-generated by the NetViz design tool.
3. Detailed interface tables identifying all physical interfaces for each platform by component connectors, cable type, cable identifier, and interface identifier.
4. Operational and System views that can be used to drill down through the design from a high level architecture to the physical details.

The client will be constructed on the NetBeans platform with the NASA WorldWind geospatial rendering engine. The project will support web based install and update, C2 application migration and 3d rendering of C2 tactical graphics. We are seeking two Computer Science engineering students. Juniors, seniors, and graduate students okay for both positions. US Citizens only, no clearances required. Essential skills: Java programming, NetBeans experience, good communications skills.
