Cubic Corporation Cubic Corporation
Cubic is a leading provider of live and virtual training systems, and a specialized supplier of military electronics and information assurance solutions. We design, innovate, manufacture, and field a diverse range of systems, products, and technologies that are critical to combat readiness and national security for the U.S. and allied nations.

1. Intuitive Process Guidance Assistant - TIP Team - This Project is in the process of reviewing current applicants, please check back for changes to application status.
Cubic Defense Applications designs and manufactures large Real-Time Complex Systems for the US and Foreign Militaries. To meet the demanding requirements of this marketplace, Cubic has put into place a very large and complex set of Engineering Processes to ensure compliance. The user interface to these processes was developed in the 1990s and is very cumbersome for the users and results in non-compliance in the cases where an Engineer did not know about a particular process step that was required.

The TIP Project will research and develop an intuitive interface for the Engineering Processes that exist. This approach provides instant access to the information necessary to carry out an Engineering assignment. The Engineer will not have to be at a desktop searching and reading/comprehending the Process documentation. This is a 'Just In Time Training' approach that will result in greater efficiency and a look/feel of a modern organization. This approach will use a natural language interface/ Graphical User Interface that will guide an Engineer thru the process step that he is currently executing. The application will be web-based and able to be displayed on a PC as well as mobile devices such as an iPad and Android. We co-create the solution by having the Cubic Engineers involved as End Users. We will also use our Usability Lab to evaluate the User experience.

Required Skills:

-3-5 Interns at the Undergraduate/Graduate level.
-Experience in developing Graphical User Interface Software, Developing User Interfaces, and creating a delightful User Experience.
-Software development experience and cognitive science experience
-US Citizenship is required.

1. Weapon Orientation Tracking - TIP Team - This Project is in the process of reviewing current applicants, please check back for changes to application status.
Today's live training for the Army and Marines is composed of instrumenting the position and posture of the trainee and providing him with a weapon that fires an encoded laser replicating the flight of a real round. Today a real opponent is required in addition to the trainee. Future training applications will increase reliance on virtual and augmented reality opposing forces against a live trainee. To provide a valid augmented reality system a variety of technical problems must be solved. One of the many problems to be tackled is the determination of the real-world pointing information for the live trainee's weapon so it can be correlated to the virtual position of his opponent. The purpose of this effort is to track the 3D orientation of a hand-held weapon with respect to the body of the soldier carrying the weapon. Later efforts will concentrate on the orientation of the soldier's body, his position in GPS-denied environments, display of virtual opponents to the live trainee, etc.

For this project weapon orientation information will be determined and displayed on a computer display showing the relative position of the weapon with respect to the soldier's body. Given a known body orientation a weapon pointing angle and azimuth will be determine such that it could be used in a fire simulation.

As envisioned the system would be composed of 5 tracking components -- 2 'beacons' attached to the ends of the weapon and 3 sensors attached to the body of the soldier at the two shoulders and the belt-buckle region to provide a triangulation grid for the beacons. The calculated position of the ends of the weapon relative to the body will be passed wirelessly to a computer that will be used to visualize the weapon orientation and to provide pointing angle and elevation given a known body position.

Hardware will have to be identified (to build or purchase) that can couple the beacons with the sensors (Zigbee, Bluetooth, etc.) with precise enough timing allowing the exact position of the beacon to be established relative to the triangle of sensors. The position of the two sensors and their known placement on the weapon allows precise display of the orientation of the weapon with respect to the body.

Deliverables 1) Identify appropriate protocols 2) Identify appropriate components and procure 3) Write Software and integrate 4) Demo internal

Required Skills:

-US Citizenship is required.

-1 Mechanical Engineer -- setup the weapon and web kit with sensors and beacons

-1 Electrical Engineer -- configure networks

-3 Software Engineers
1. Create and test the beacon / sensor interfaces and communications software
2. Generate position calculations and create Kalman or other filters as necessary
3. Create the orientation display assuming a body-centric view (e.g. moving arms and weapon, stationary body)
4. Create database / data stream format and implement storage and retrieval mechanisms

1. Live Instrumented Training and Cyberwarfare-TIP - This Project is in the process of reviewing current applicants, please check back for changes to application status.
Cubic Defense provides Live Instrumented Training Systems for US and Foreign Air Forces and Ground Forces. These systems instrument Aircraft, tanks, trucks, and people to provide position and event data such as a weapon select and weapon trigger. We use this data to feed weapons simulations to provide simulated kinetic weapon events. In today's world, there exists another domain of warfare--Cyber. In the Cyber Domain, non-kinetic weapons (virus, malware, DDOS) can cause non-kinetic effects, or are used to cause kinetic effects (STUXNET). Our customers need to integrate Live Instrumented Training with Cyber domain training to coordinate kinetic and non-kinetic effects in the training battlefield.

Each training exercise employs a 'White Team'. The White Team is responsible to observe the exercise in real-time and note cause and effect events for later After Action Review (AAR) of the training exercise. At the AAR, the White reviews the training exercise with the participants to provide information on how the training objectives were met or not met and what kind of effects were observed that the training participants missed. Currently White Team members with clipboards watch the Cyber events and write down observations independent of the Live Instrumented participants. After the exercise, they analyze the Packet Capture (PCAP) database to determine Red (Bad Guys) and Blue (Good Guys) effects and efficiencies.

The limits are: - The debrief occurs about two weeks after the exercise because of the manpower intensive nature of the current practice. Most participants are off on other tasks by that time. - The PCAP database does not capture all of the data since the Cyber mission is run on the DOD IO Range which has many nodes and the team does not have access to all participating nodes. - The forensics of analyzing the PCAP database may miss events. - There are real time events such as Blue Defenders responding to a threat or perceived threat and causing Blue Cyber Fratricide.

Project The team, under direction of a Cubic lead will develop user interfaces and unique visualizations of the kinetic and non-kinetic events on the training battlefield. Intuitive, intelligent user interfaces with semantic query will be developed to provide the White with real-time interaction with the training exercise. Unique 3D graphic visualizations will be developed that show an integrated view of the kinetic (Live Instrumented) effects coordinated with the non-kinetic (Cyber) effects.

Required Skills:

-3-5 Interns at the Undergraduate/Graduate level.
-Experience in developing Graphical User Interface Software, Developing User Interfaces, 3D Graphic Visualization, Network Visualization, and creating a delightful User Experience.
-Software development experience and cognitive science experience/interest
-US Citizenship is required.

1. OSIsoft Energy & Sustainability Projects - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
The UCSD Data Center has over 80,000 measurements (streaming data from instruments located in buildings, power plants and substations around the campus). These data are stored in a time series database called the PI System. The data rates vary from 1 per minute to 60 per second.

Each project will commence with a 1-week on campus training program on how to use the basic PI system. A second 3-day training class will follow for those interested in using the more advanced analytical computation tools in the PI system.

The 5 potential projects are listed below:

1. Energy Sustainability This project will focus on displaying real time key performance indicators (KPIs) for most of the buildings on campus. A set of web based graphic displays will be built using a PI System product called "Coresight". The graphics will include trends and graphical rendering of the KPIs as well as comparative analysis of the building performance. The displays will be available to all on the campus. We hope this will foster competition between buildings to obtain the highest level of sustainability. The project will commence with a one week on campus training program on how to use the basic PI System. The goal is to have the campus wide building sustainability displays available by start of the fall quarter.

2. Microgrid--Early blackout warning detection This project will focus on using the 60 measurements per second data from new phasor measurement units (PMUs) being installed in the East Campus substation. The raw data includes time synchronized current and voltage phasors as well as real and reactive power. The data processing will include the use of real time Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) which are computed using built-in PI software. Additional calculations on the raw data will be performed using a standard PI analytic tool called ACE. These include computing the angle differences and frequency differences. These resulting calculations will provide early warning of impending blackouts. The resulting calculation will be displayed using the PI ProcessBook display building tool. Automatic notifications will be configured to alert campus personnel when the blackouts are anticipated. The goal is to have the ProcessBook displays and the automatic notifications in place by August 1, 2012.

3. Microgrid--Local frequency and voltage control This project will focus on understanding the dynamic response of the two turbine generators at the Central Utility Plant. MATLAB will be used to simulate the dynamics of the generators and using data from the standard interface to the PI system from MATLAB, compare the simulation results with the actual data. The MATLAB System Identification Toolkit will be used to identify the parameters in the dynamic model using historical data in the PI System. The model will then be used to determine the dynamic response of the generators to voltage and frequency disturbances. The optimal tuning parameters for the voltage and frequency controllers will be determined and the response of these compared to the current controller tuning parameters will be evaluated. These new settings could be used in the existing control system. A second controller will be designed that will include the coupling between frequency and voltage in response to changes in real and reactive power injection. This will be compared with the individual frequency and voltage controllers.

Requirements: -MATLAB and the System Identification Toolkit

4. Microgrid--Transformer condition monitoring This project will focus on demonstrating a software algorithm to estimate the condition of the 69kV/12kV transformers feeding the campus. Real time current and voltage phasors measured on the high and low side of the transformer will be used to compute the transformer impedance. The resulting impedance will be continuously analyzed using built-in PI System analytical tools (Statistical Quality Control, SQC). These analyses will be used to trigger automatic notifications to key campus personnel.

5. Campus--3-D Energy display This project will focus on creating 3-D displays of the power and energy consumption in buildings on the campus. Building performance metrics will also be displayed. Google Buildings display technology will be used. This includes creating 3-D shapes for each building and connecting data from the PI System to the 3-D building object. This will required accessing the PI System data via Web Services, OLEDB, or JDBC calls to the PI System. The displays will clearly show the building with best performance as well as the building with the worst performance. The data will be available to anyone with access to GoogleEarth. A second set of web based displays will be created that include geospatial contours of the key performance indicators as well as meteorological data. The key research topic is the correlation of building energy performance with its geospatial location on the campus and the wind, humidity, and temperature distribution. The resulting system will aid future researchers determine the effects of local micro-climate on building performance and may lead to additional research on 3-D heat flux losses due to turbulent eddies around buildings. Some initial work on dynamic models of buildings will be proposed.

Requirements: -Experience in building web based displays -Experience with SQL calls via OLEDB or JDBC

OSIsoft will host 2 teams of interns to work on energy and sustainability projects over the summer (EE/CE/CS/EnvE students).

Required Skills:

Requirements for all projects:
-Windows software
-Some programming in Basic or other Microsoft languages
-Familiarity with Microsoft SQL server will be helpful

1. Moores Cancer Center Service Line - TIP Team - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Thousands of individuals turn to Moores Cancer Center for the comprehensive care and complex treatment available only at academic medical centers. Our patients have access to the latest technological advances, compassionately provided by physicians and surgeons with a tremendous scope of knowledge and expertise. Moores Cancer Center is one of just 40 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and the only one in the San Diego region. Such centers are prominent among the leading institutions in the nation dedicated to scientific innovation and clinical excellence, and studies show that outcomes are better at NCI-designated centers. Our building, which opened in 2005, brings clinical care together with support services, clinical trials, prevention and outreach programs, and cancer research laboratories--all under one roof. The building houses two structures with a common base: a three-story facility for clinical care and administration, and a five-story research tower. This design encourages interaction and intellectual exchanges between our world-renowned clinicians and researchers.

The priorities of the June 2011 clinical strategic plan has had a significant focus on growing the volume of the Cancer Service Line. This focus, in combination with the already limited number of clinical exam rooms in the multi-specialty clinic at the Moores Cancer Center, has created an environment where patient access is limited by the constraints of our current facilities. This project aims to reduce multi-specialty clinic throughput cycle time, thereby improving patient satisfaction, improving patient access, reducing the need to acquire additional clinic exam rooms, and creating a more effective and cost-sensitive work environment for our multidisciplinary teams.

The team will consist of 2 engineering students and 2 MBA students.

Required Skills:

1. Medical Device Analysis & Inventory Mgmt - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
UC San Diego Medical Center is the focal point for our education and community service missions. The hospital recently engaged in several large project improvements, including an expansion of emergency and trauma services, and seismic retrofitting, representing an $80 million investment.

Services Include: -Surgery -Diagnosis and management of genetic diseases -Neurology -Orthopedics -Hyperbaric Medicine Center

The 386-bed hospital at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest is also houses: -Bone Marrow Transplantation -The area's only Regional Burn Center -A Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) -The only hospital-based Birth Center in the area -Level I Trauma Center (one of only two in the county) -National Institutes of Health-Designated Clinical Research Center

Accessibility to current laboratory values is critical for the management of intensive care patients. We are planning to pursue a device that puts this ability at the bedside, avoiding waiting for specimens to have to go to centralized laboratory for results. The project proposed involves the benefit of using an ISTAT device in the 10th floor ICU at Hillcrest. We want to know how introduction of this device might impact the quality of care, clinical decision-making, ICU length of stay and any other pertinent metrics. The project would involve time-motion studies on use of the device as well as data collection and cost-benefit analysis on the use of the equipment in this specific critical care setting. Although, we have plans to deploy the ISTAT on a limited basis within the SCVC Operating Rooms and the Emergency Department as a pilot, there are questions regarding the value of expanding the use in the critical care environment. Another possible project for this team would involve inventory management in the Hillcrest ED. There is inadequate tracking and mgmt. of inventory in the Hillcrest ED. There is also a perceived opportunity to improve the space use and organization of inventory.

The team will consist of 2 engineering students and 2 MBA students.

Required Skills:

-Independent project management skills; time mgmt.; project planning; goal achieving
-Data analysis skills; ability to collect, analyze and present statistical analysis of cycle time data and other key performance metrics
-Application of improvement sciences: process flow analysis; human factors; lean, six sigma

1. Ancillary Support Structures - TIP Team - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
A gas turbine package requires an air inlet and exhaust system that for larger engines, are often accompanied with complex and costly support structures. Traditionally these structures are made of I-beam, channel and/or square tubing that are joined with standard fasteners. Developing 'standard' structures that can accommodate a variety of air inlet, exhaust and enclosure ventilation arrangements, however, has proven to be a challenge. Plus, tolerance 'stack ups' throughout the system often cause installation problems that require field fixes. There exist off the shelf beam attaching methods that present significant advantages in terms of cost reduction and versatility, however, which could be considered for these applications. The purpose of this project is to evaluate these various attaching methods and then design and analyze a support structure for a common air inlet and enclosure ventilation system for one of the larger engine products (Mars or Titan). Benefits of the application include reducing cost, increasing the quality and accuracy of the design, and developing a versatile support structure design method that can be replicated across other products and applications.

The ITM hearing aid requires mechanical design and algorithm development for automated gain control allowing high gain when TCM is sensing and low gain when wearer is talking.

Sonitus Medical will support this project with additional electrical engineering capabilities as well as support prototyping of both electronic assemblies and mechanical designs.

Required Skills:

Mechanical Engineer, senior
- Design of TCM based on existing prototype
- Design of ITM hearing aid
- Assembly process development

Software Engineer, senior
- Automated gain control algorithm implementation in assembly language
- Environmental classification and mode control in assembly language
- Microphone PreAmp adjustments
- Attack time and level (dB)
- Release time and level (dB)
- Transition between the two states (listening and speaking) in an in-perceivable manner
