Every company wants to be Customer focused. Cisco is no exception. Whether it is our core routing and switching business that powers the world's internet or new markets such as Smart Grid, Virtual HealthCare, or Consumer, the challenge for us is distilling our top Customer care abouts - defining them in objective terms and aligning our internal process measures to deliver an unrivaled Customer experience each and every time for our top customers (no matter vertical industry, market segment, or geographic region). One of the key roles Corporate Quality plays in this annual tuning of our Customer business intelligence direction is to pore through the myriad Voice of the Customer data sources we have - be it satisfaction surveys, Customer verbatim, or even live network health telemetry from our Customers' networks, to identify the key drivers of Customer satisfaction and the thresholds that yield the greatest loyalty to the Cisco brands.
As a CQ Metrics intern, you will be working on gathering and manipulating real Customer and Cisco data to discover relationships critical to quality and Customer experience. You will be asked to test hypotheses for which internal "levers" we should pull and how hard to lean on these to delight our Customers in key market spaces. The team will be expected to work with engineering and manufacturing teams to identify root causes and cure. At the end of the studies, the team will present its findings, recommendations, and expected benefits to cross-functional oversight committees to help prioritize our next year's investments both in process management and process improvement activities.

0. UltraThin Lens Application to Several Space Imaging Missions - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
The novel multi-fold annular lens design was advanced under a team at the University of California, led by Dr. Joseph Ford (Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering and lead for his Photonics Systems Integration Lab (PSI-Lab) at UCSD). The small size of this thin lens approach lends itself to being integrated inside the cold dewar that is used to house infrared focal plane arrays (FPA). The dewar is normally used for cooling the FPA and lowering the noise. If it can be used for housing the optics with the FPA, the results will aid the difficult issue of cooling the optics when operating in the infrared spectral bands. This integration approach has the potential of substantially reducing the size of the complete sensor system and significantly lowering the thermal emitted photon noise, see the adjacent figure for a size comparison.
The potential space applications include NASAs Earth Venture missions and the Department of Defense Theater and Strategic missions.

0. Automated Identification of Distribution Assets Using Smart Grid - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Over the next few years, SDG&E will continue to develop and deploy smart grid technologies that add awareness, communications and control capability to our electric distribution system. The Smart Grid program refers to a transformation of all information and control systems improving the business operations through technology, and also supports the utility in modernizing its grid. SDG&Es electric grid has been deployed over many years and covers a territory of 4100 square miles. It includes 1.4 million electric meters serving 3.4 million customers. Due to the size, complexity and dynamic nature of the construction of this grid, there is currently incomplete or missing information on many assets in SDG&Es distribution system such as the size of service lines and customer panels, phase identity of electric cables, the number of meters per transformer, and the GIS location of meters and transformers. This problem is common to all utilities. This project will investigate and identify ways to use new Smart Grid enabled communication, sensing and measurement technologies to discover missing information in an automated fashion. The project will lead to a reference design, patent application or both. Areas of investigation in this project will include: -Identifying missing asset information -Identifying data made available by Smart Grid sensors and measurement systems -Means to identify, store and analyze available data to infer characteristics of unidentified assets -Algorithms to convert system behavior characteristics into asset characteristics -Business models and business value related to automated discovery of asset characteristics using Smart Grid technology -Automated GIS mapping

0. Energy and Weather Research Project - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
SDG&E is seeking: -2 EnvE (atmospheric knowledge preferred) -1 ChemE (modeling experience preferred) -1 ME (modeling experience required)
Requirements: -Interest in wind and solar energy -Interest in weather -US Citizenship/Permanent Residency required
Since construction of the SDG&E MesoNet began in 2009, SDG&E has built the nations densest weather network right here in San Diego County. Currently, we are collecting 75,000 pieces of data daily, compiling what is developing into a vast resource of Santa Ana Wind Data. While tracking and monitoring the data, it is apparent that the winds are highly variable from one event to the next. Through research, there are several questions that we would like to have answered. 1. How do the location, strength, and movement of the synoptic features effect the velocity and distribution of the surface winds in San Diego County?
2. Do the air temperatures of the pre-existing air mass over the Great Basin and the Desert Southwest impact which wind corridors see the strongest winds across San Diego County?
3. How do the Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) across San Diego County compare to the data that is being collected by the SDG&E MesoNet? Are the RAWS providing a good representation of the wind in all conditions? Are there certain synoptic scenarios when the RAWS provide a better representation of the overall winds than others? Additionally, we would like these students to review publications, papers, peer reviews, and periodicals for mathematical quantitative modeling examples on how the physical properties of weather (e.g., temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed and the different types of cloud cover) affect Solar Photovoltaic generation (kiwi) output. Then we would like these students to: Improve upon the existing models found, or if no adequate models exist, create a new mathematical model with the following variables: satellite transmittance (max expected irradiance less total calculated atmospheric radiant remittance) data, pyranometer irradiance readings, PV site temperature, area relative humidity, site wind speed, and cloud cover to predict Solar Photovoltaic Generation in watt output.
Model predictions will be validated against existing empirical data. A static model will be created first to build on, leading to the creation of a dynamic model (i.e., one that models output from the change in the individual variables). Then by finding the correlation between empirical satellite transmittance data and solar irradiance measured, we can understand the relationship between cloud cover and solar radiation that reaches the surface. At least 2 of the students for this study should have a focus in Atmospheric or Environmental Science Studies or Research. The 3rd student should be a chemical engineering or physics major, ideally with modeling background, however not required based on the 4th students requirements. The 4th student should have a mathematics, engineering, or physics background and experience building models.
0. MC-HL, Design for Manufacturability & Serviceability - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
A Turbine Package contains dozens of electrical devices that monitor and control the turbine and driven equipment. To meet Solar's objective of using one standard wiring method for these devices for all products worldwide, a cable: Metal Clad for Hazardous Locations (MC-HL) has been selected. However, MC-HL is a "stiff" cable with a limited bend radius and tendency to break if bent multiple times. This characteristic makes installing the cable and servicing it challenging. Ideas to increase the robustness of the cable and offer more flexibility, especially for applications with high maintenance will reduce challenges for production and the field. The team will explore design options with the cable and glands suppliers as well as interface with users who have experience with MC-HL cable internal and external to Solar. Constraints include maintaining the certification of the cable and glands.

0. Loss of AC Transient Motor/Pump Ride Through - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
This assignment consists of developing systems that can handle transient conditions associated with the loss of AC power. Solar's liquid fuel system is an essential system to our package providing our customers with an alternative fuel supply in the event that gas is not available. To ensure that Solar will remain competitive in the global market after the introduction of new European regulations, Solar needs to develop a means to ensure the Variable Frequency Drive main fuel pump can ride through a power interruption of 1.5 seconds. The project will involve developing different designs, evaluating and testing each design in Solar's labs. The deliverable for this part of the project is to provide a recommendation on which design to implement. The selection of step-starters for DC motors is vital in ensuring that Solar's packages are lubricated during a loss in AC power. Using a combination of simulations and verification through testing, a program will be developed to select appropriately sized step-starters for DC motors ensuring adequate performance of the lubrication system. Desired but not required would be experience with (Variable Frequency Drive) VFD, RSLogix5000 and MatLab, in particular the SimPower module.
