Possible projects include:

Characterize monoclonal antibodies (mabs)to novel dyes

The generation of monoclonal antibodies to novel dyes will be explored as a novel area for R&D. These mAbs may be useful for detecting the presence of dyes, stabilizing dyes, purification or other potential uses. Intern will receive training in tissue culture, immunoassays, mAb development, flow cytometry, dye composition.

Characterization of a novel cell population seen in antigen specific immune responses

Periodically novel cell populations are discovered within the immune system. One such novel antigen specific population has been observed to emerge early in murine immune response to proteinaceous immunogens. These cells appear between days 8-14, have no B cell markers, capture antigen, bear surface Ig and are polymorphonuclear. Much remains to be characterized on these cells. This project will focus upon the effects of dose or non proteinaceous immunogens on the emergence of the same cell population. Intern will receive training in tissue culture, immunoassays, animal handling, mAb development, flow cytometry.

Multi-color flow cytometry market development

To set up multi-color flow cytometry experiments correctly requires detailed knowledge of the proteins you wish to detect and the antibodies you will use to detect them.  This project will focus on collecting data for the approximately 100 most popular clones used in multi-color flow.  Using these clones the researcher will determine antigen density and will determine relative brightness of the different fluor conjugates we sell.  Testing will be performed on multiple donors using at least two different flow cytometers. The intern will receive experience in flow cytometry assays from immunostaining to instrument set-up and data analysis.

Characterization of Novel Single Laser Flow Cytometers

BD is developing new single laser flow cytometers to take advantage of recently introduced novel Violet and Ultraviolet fluorescent monoclonal antibody reagents. 1. GUI for Rules Based Engine - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
The rules engine input file (conditions.xml) is quite long and complex.  This makes it very difficult for users to visualize and understand all possible states and situations.  Currently there is not ability to take the conditions.xml file and visually view the relationships and all states.  Also, editing of the conditions.xml file is all manual.  Finally, recreation of previous run and the states of the conditions is done manually by user looking at the log.

Develop a GUI that parses condition.xml and performs the following functions:

Display all relationships and states. Perform some syntax and sanity check (such as detecting infinite condition loops). Parse a log file and reconstruct the condition state. The GUI should be able to step through the states of the run. During the step through, the GUI should visually depict the states of the conditions.

1. Warning System Monitoring Tool - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
NextBus currently uses a software system called LilSister, which allows for monitoring and various system components to notify support staff (via email) about important events or problems. Various software modules will contact LilSister when a problem is detected or some issue needs to be broadcast. LilSister will contact people by email based on various configuration rules. Due to large number of customers, its more difficult to manage events and error messages from LilSister. Moreover, error messages are cached in memory instead of a database. We are looking to enhance our System monitoring functionality by adding following features:

Reduce number of lilsister servers to one (or a small cluster, maybe one with a backup) Create a db for lilsister to store problems reported When lilsister sends out the daily message about errors reported, it should just send ONE email with ALL agencies in tabular form Add intelligence to truncate the report by only listing 1 instance of each error per agency (if time permits) Allow annotations for errors reported

1. Enhanced PWB Embedded Heater Design - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Some of our products require startup and operation at temperatures well below the minimum operating temperature of the components used.  To meet these requirements, we've started embedding heater elements into the PWBs.  Last summer, a team of interns designed a process and tools to determine the heater element parameters, based on the input requirements and mechanical design.  Several test PWBs with various mechanical enclosures, along with thermal models to predict the heater performance were built.  This summer,  further validation of the test assemblies will be conducted.  Design tools will be created that analyze design requirement inputs (time, temperature, power supply/budget, mechanical/thermal structure, etc.) and calculate the required heater element parameters (power required, heater trace geometries, allowable tolerances, etc.).  The focus will be on software to support additional testing and modeling on the hardware created last summer.  New tests such as adding components to the boards, adding heatsinking material and adding vias to the PWBs will be explored as time allows.

1. Scalable Compute Farm - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Interns will design and implement an MPI based scalable compute farm for doing massively parallel monte-Carlo computer simulations, e.g. for block error rate simulations (BLER). MPI stands for Message Passing Interface. It is an industry standard library (API) for implementing distributed computing algorithms. Typically, the monte-carlo simulation is a command line driven program that outputs results to the screen or to a text file. Using different random seeds, one may manually run multiple copies of the monte-carlo binary executable on multiple computers (or multiple copies of the simulation on the same computer using different cores) and manually collect the results. In this project , students will use the MPI library to automate this process.

The compute farm should be capable of existing locally or existing in the Amazon EC2 service ("The Cloud"). Expected outcome would allow for an integrated modem demod+decode performance simulation capable of outputting BLER curves for all modcodes in a single 24 hour period. Reduced simulation time will allow for more rapid hardware development/verification time and faster time to market. For example, ASIC developments time could be greatly accelerated.

Phase 1) Build local compute farm

Build a local compute farm out of 8-10x quad-core 1U rack mount computers. Install Linux OS, configure networking, configure MPI tools. Modify a LDPC decoder simulation to add MPI capability. Verify same BLER vs EsNo performance in MPI vs non-MPI environment. Verify simulation time speedup to target rates.

Phase 2) Static Cloud Computing

Deploy MPI cluster to Amazon EC2 static cloud infrastructure. Update LDPC decoder simulation for static cloud.

Phase 3) Dynamic Cloud Computing

Update LDPC decoder simulation to dynamically instantiate cloud computing resources. Develop a GUI for simulation monitoring and batch launching. Develop financial modeling tool to help engineers and resource planners trade longer simulation runtime w/ few cloud resources vs shorter simulation runtime w/ many cloud resources.

1. Gas Group Definition Tool - TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Gas Turbine applications include mechanical and electrical sources of ignition. Due to the need for maintenance, GT enclosures must contain air. Explosive/combustible gases are typically present in the fuels supplied to the GT or within the compressed gases. Oxygen, a source of ignition, and an explosive gas at the suitable concentration are the three major factors responsible for creating an explosive atmosphere which could lead to an explosion if adequate methods of protection are not designed within the equipment. Using electrical equipment suitable for the gas group of the explosive gas available in the area is critical for the overall safety of personnel and equipment. Due to the increasing need for using new fuels, different sources of fuels including uncommon gas mixtures are introduced in the power generation and oil & gas markets. Examples include coke oven gas and syngas. A reliable user-friendly tool to define gas groups of different mixtures is needed to ensure developing the appropriate design. Research will include studying the rules and  limitations of the applicable codes and standards for hazardous locations, working with Solar’s subject matter experts and/or third-party consultants, and developing and testing the tool as well as a user-friendly interface. Testing of representative fuel samples at third-party labs such as PTB could be in scope as well. Feedback from Project Applications Engineering will be used to modify the tool as needed.
