The Integrated Systems Group of Leidos currently has an opening for a Software Engineer Intern in San Diego, CA.

Leidos has developed a solution that provides cryptographic key escrow capabilities for Government agencies. This solution provides the mass decryption of S/MIME encrypted emails during investigations by internal departments (e.g., Office of Inspector General). Cryptographic keys are stored within this solution in a FIPS 140-2 Level 3 container, providing tamper detection and resistance features to ensure the security of the key material.

Organizations that have implemented Personal Identity Verification (PIV) smart cards require that the private keys used for confidentiality, authentication and data integrity safeguards always be stored in hardware security containers.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Students will be involved in the extension of the existing baseline solution to support additional features and capabilities.

- Students will support the development of interfaces to various cryptographic products, creation of solution management capabilities, and evaluation of security controls applied to the product for hardening purposes.

- Students will also investigate additional features for addition to the solution roadmap, to include capabilities related to management of key material in cloud and mobile environments.

Required Skills:

-Currently a junior or senior pursing a degree is Computer Science or Electrical Engineering with Computer Science exposure.

SUMMARY

Plans and designs mechanical, pneumatical and electromechanical products and systems by performing the following duties.

GENERAL DUTIES

Researches and analyzes data such as customer or internal design proposal, machine model, specifications and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application. Uses data and specifications from current machine model to designs products and systems to interface between machines, hardware, and software. Uses feedback to modify designs. Assist manufacturing in building the prototype by answering any engineering questions related to the manufacturing of the machines.

Take data and specification from a working machine model and design/engineer a new machine that can be produced.

Complete a set of drawings and BoM so the parts can be procured/manufactured 

Establish assembly instructions as needed to mass-produce machine

This position is part of PG&E's Summer Intern Program and will be placed in the Gas Operations organization. Location to be determined within our service territory.

Engineering Interns will have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Intern Program designed to help students gain valuable knowledge and experience in PG&E’s Gas Operations. Each Engineering Intern will be placed in a specific department within Gas Operations, and will be expected to contribute as a valuable team member.

This position is located within the Regulatory and Field Compliance department within a larger Codes and Standards organization supporting all of Gas Operations.   The work group is titled "Work Execution Compliance".  This position would consist of approximately 1/2 time in office and 1/2 time in field.  It will require travel system wide (focused on 4-5 areas) to observe maintenance work and record keeping procedures performed in field.

Team members will analyze existing tools and options for porting code to determine the most effective approach.

While the system is able to process billions of email every month, there are areas around reporting information that need to be improved.

For example, the time, status, and email address of each individualized email that the MTA servers push at the individual subscriber is not reported to the users in an actionable way.

The goal of the project is to do record this data and display it via a web interface.

Reducing drag of aircraft is of the utmost importance to the commercial aerospace industry. Successful drag reduction can enable lower fuel burn, lower flight costs, and reduce environmental impact. Previous studies have shown using micro-contoured surface skins such as riblets or shark skin can reduce surface drag. Unfortunately these skins deteriorate under the high stress weathering conditions of flight, resulting in a loss of aerodynamic performance. This study will evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of using of local air disruption made using ‘virtual riblets’ to decrease drag. The student team will design and conduct experiments to determine the efficiency of this system and ultimately determine the feasibility of ‘virtual riblets’.

Aircraft turbofan engines are shrouded in an aerodynamic surface. This is the nacelle, under which lie numerous engine systems that must be accessed for maintenance and safety checks. Part of the nacelle system, the thrust reverser, is hinged opened from the engine with a power door opening system (PDOS) and then held in place with hold open rods. Aerostructures would like to investigate combining the PDOS with the hold open rod. The team will trade design solutions for weight, cost impacts, reliability, human factors, and safety while assessing their structural capability. This study will culminate in the presentation of the team’s findings.

Solar Turbines Inc. manufactures a wide selection of large industrial gas compressors, in addition to our range of industrial gas turbines. In finding solutions for our customers, Solar Turbines will create a full range of capabilities to meet their requirements, including the creation of fully functional systems. Typically, in our Compressor Set engineered packages, a turbine will be coupled with a gas compressor to fit our customer's needs, with all auxillary systems to support the functionality of the package.

In certain circumstances, however, the customer will demand that a turbine not be used to power the gas compressor. This demand is due to a wide variety of reasons, ranging from product compliance, usage of legacy systems, location footprint, or safety. In these scenarios, an Electric Motor Drive (EMD) is used in place of the turbine to power the gas compressor. Because of the frequency of EMD demands, it is prudent to standardize and rationalize future usage of EMD packages to allow for agile engineering.

Interns will take a standard routine created from Composite Project Definitions (CPD) and implement all Project Creation Notes (PCN) related to the CPD release to a previously commissioned Electric Motor Drive project software and electrical schematics/drawings.

The end result is a robust template that will be used as a starting point for all future Electric Motor Drive projects.  The Intern will be working under the guidance of the Controls Design Engineer and using RSLogix, and may learn Promis-e V8i, which is the drawing application to generate and edit the Electrical Loop Schematics (ELS).

Display System Development is responsible for development and testing of the software used by turbine operators to monitor the state of the turbine package.  Testing of this software is done using a combination of manual and automated tests. The automated tests are run using a simplified interface developed by a previous intern- however, this setup only allows for running one test configuration at a time.

This project would be to design a user interface that would allow a user to easily specify test settings for the automated test scripts, such as which test project and which OS to run on. This user interface would also allow for entering multiple configurations to be run sequentially, and integrate with the current interface used in house to run the automated tests.

One of the biggest sources of missed defects is project types that don’t get regularly tested. In a regular test cycle we typically look at a basic single unit generator, a single unit compressor, a multi-language job, and a multi-unit job. This does not cover the vast majority of project “flavors” that leave our facility. This interface would allow us to run the automated tests on more different types of projects each test cycle, which would allow us to catch more defects before the software goes out. This would increase our Built in Quality. The interface would also allow us to queue up multiple projects to be run sequentially, potentially overnight, which would increase the velocity of the test effort.

The proposed interface could also have uses in other areas of the business. The systems standards group could use it to test more project types with their tools. This would allow them to catch defects before they pass the tools to their downstream customers. In addition, allowing for easily switching the automated tests between projects could make these tests easier for Controls DEs to use. This would allow them to test their project screens more efficiently, improving their quality and velocity.

The ability to scale such information to compare between design and physical form in a timely manner will help Solar determine root cause of defects. A Solar Turbine engine and package system collects a large quantity of data from sensors and actuators used for control and protection functions for turbine engine, driven and ancillary equipment. Instrumentation often serves a single protective function with discrete level differentiation between normal/abnormal or danger condition. In addition many desirable process variables are not measured directly due to cost and complexity.  One or several instruments may be used together along with variation over time, to create additional non-physical or virtual sensings that provide estimates of additional system variables (i.e. flows, pressures, temperatures, and efficiencies), from existing instrumentation. The opportunity is to extract additional information from existing measurements and instruments to identify or estimate the state of the equipment or process to increase availability through redundancy, or provide additional information through virtual sensing capabilities or enhance control laws for improved performance.

The team will:

Investigate how existing instrumentation and system models can be used to create virtual sensing and redundancy capabilities.  Investigate the estimation and identification of upstream disturbances for use in control applications. Explore the benefits, limitations, and applicability of adding feed-forward control scheme, which exploits uncertain forecast measurements, in order to improve disturbance rejection capabilities in the control of gas turbines.

Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) is a Combat Management System protecting the USN ships against hostile threats. The project includes concept, development, analysis for expansion the SSDS MATLAB analysis tool-set, developed for the next-generation Ford-Class aircraft carrier (CVN 78), for use on legacy ship platforms including the Nimitz Class aircraft carrier fleet.  This will require working with multiple engineering disciplines to understand how new combat system analysis techniques developed for CVN 78 can be utilized for analyzing SSDS on other Navy platforms.  The purpose of these analysis tools will be to determine combat system behavior and performance. Some tools that will be will include MATLAB scripts to evaluate own-ship radar tracking, data fusion from multiple ship platforms, own-ship missile scheduling, weapons grade radar track filtering and a variety of other Fire Control Loop (FCL) actions.  The final result will be the modification of existing MATLAB analysis tools, and developing an Engineering Control mechanism to reduce or eliminate redevelopment of tools across platforms and engineering disciplines.

We will be setting up a new Business Rules Management System (BRMS) based on Apache Drools that will replace several legacy rules engine implementations internally. Team will be comprised of 3 Computre Science students and 1 Business Student (General or Finance).

 High-level tasks for the team: ·  Learn the Apache Drools platform (http://www.jboss.org/drools/), which has been selected as our new       rules engine. ·  Discover the types of rules that have been placed into our existing rules-based systems. ·  Write scripts that will convert/transpile rules from our legacy systems into the new rules engine. ·  Validate that the rules run as expected on the new platform. ·  Document the business case for the overall cost savings and opportunities stemming from the new system.

Required Skills:

1. The computer science students should have taken classes that expose them to compilers, language grammars, and “AI” languages (such as prolog). This knowledge will enable them to recognize patterns in the rules and to write the rules translator/compiler (“transpiler”). Also, they should have taken classes or have had experience in writing Java in case there are any rules that need to be implemented in code.

 

2. Project Description:

The current masking practice for aircraft paint stripping is labor intensive, time consuming, and requires significant expertise. Our goal is to develop low-cost, reusable masking tools using additive manufacturing technology.  In this team project, 2 engineers (mechanical, aerospace, or structural) will be introduced to and trained in the use of: a portable laser scanner, its accompanying software, a reverse engineering CAD package Rapidform, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) additive manufacturing technologies.  The team will meet with artisans and engineers to determine which areas of the aircraft need to be masked, and establish an understanding of the desired end-use requirements. They will collect surface data of the masking areas with a laser scanner and use it to design sui/13table masking tools, while considering how each tool will be used and manufactured.

Deliverables will include: one set of mask 3D models, as many physical masks as time and workload permit, all supporting 3D data and models, production and life-cycle cost estimates.

This project will pave the road for further capability enhancements and will be shared with other NAVAIR Fleet Readiness Center facilities around the country for replication.
