0. Data Services Technical Support - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Cymer is seeking two interns for this project.

Fault Signature Detection (FSD) provides a means of processing chunks of laser data to automatically classify them as exhibiting one of several different faults. This helps Field Service and Engineering to very quickly narrow and correct the root cause of a problem, and improves the accuracy and efficacy of the solution. The current FSD is capable of analyzing only one of at least four different types of laser data. Additionally, the current system does not place the results into a hierarchy. The scope of the project is a)add to FSD the capability to process and create signatures of additional types of laser data and b) begin creating a method to more finely categorize found faults into a hierarchy.

Intern 1:

Objective: Upgrade the capabilities of the current FSD system to include use of all available logging information (current system only uses one type of log). Improve the user interface to both viewing FSD's results, and adding new signatures to the library. Begin work on categorizing and structuring resulting faults into a hierarchy.

Qualifications: Searching for a student pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering with emphasis in controls systems.

Good Matlab programming skills required, with practical experience a plus. Strong physics classroom work or background a plus. Good teamwork and technical writing skills required.

Intern 2:

Intern will be responsible for adding improvements to existing programs, creating web pages within an existing website, and developing/refactoring enterprise applications.

Candidate will help review, extend and contribute to one or more of the many internal projects currently active with in the DSTS group. These include Software development, web development (php), enterprise systems (python), Linux server maintenance and administration (shell scripting), as well as reports generation (Excel), data analysis (PostgreSQL, MSSQL, Oracle) and other related technologies.

0. Soft-Story Seismic Testing Feasibility Study - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
State Farm Insurance is seeking two Structural Engineering (SE) students to work on this project over the summer. Some work will be done here at UCSD with the guidance of a UCSD faculty member; however, one month will be spent in Illinois at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne (UIUC). There, you will be paired with two other SE students from UIUC, as well as some business students from UIUC.

Soft-Story is a term describing open or weaker construction of the lower level in a building (typically the first story at grade) below levels of more rigid or solid construction (upper stories); commonly manifested by a lack of structural walls and bracing, or large openings in walls, for tuck-under parking, garages, or buildings with store-fronts or large windows. Soft-story construction is susceptible to damage and collapse during earthquakes due to lack of resistance to the horizontal ground motions accompanying seismic events.

This Project is an investigation into the performance of light-frame wood structures with soft-story construction in earthquake events, including both commercial and residential buildings. Commercial (California Zone only) - multi-story multi-family housing and open-front mercantile/office space Residential (all Zones with EQ exposure) single family homes; possibly some other occupancies Research should include review of existing unreinforced soft-story structures (un-mitigated risks) and existing retro-fit installations. Secondary research needs to be performed to identify previous investigations of, and design solutions for, soft-story issues. Limited field investigation should be conducted in representative construction types at multiple locations (multiple states as accessible to the interns).

An appropriate model needs to be developed for testing, from one (or a combination) of the following: an existing predominate risk (construction type) identified in multiple locations an existing common retrofit measure a new concept for loss mitigation of potential soft-story damage The goal of the Project is to prepare a feasibility study for performing a shake-table test of the selected model (including costs, timing, criteria and other requirements). The approach is anticipated to consist of testing the selected predominate risk with retro-fit/mitigation measure in place, then testing without mitigation, for purposes of comparison of performance and evaluation of benefit.

Two Structural Engineering students are needed with knowledge in the following:

- light-frame wood construction

- shake-table experimentation

- seismic analysis and detailing/design

- familiarity with seismic behavior and risk levels nationwide

- ability to access seismic records as a basis for future testing

- knowledge of building codes- especially 2009 IBC and IRC.

The goal is that this project will continue on a part time basis into the fall quarter. So please only apply if you have an interest in continuing to work in the fall. You will continue to get paid for the work that you do.

For the month that students will travel to Illinois:

Flight, housing, and local travel costs will all be paid by State Farm.

Payment: State Farm will be paying students at an hourly rate for the work they do here at UCSD and for the work they do in Illinois.

Location: UC San Diego and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne.
