1. Total Console Load Calculator- TIP - This Project is in the process of reviewing current applicants, please check back for changes to application status.
Solar is proud to host summer interns through UCSD’s Team Internship Program.  Interns will have the opportunity to:

Experience hands-on engineering work  Work with Engineering Mentors, Leaders, and Subject Matter Experts to gain valuable knowledge and project direction  Participate in departmental networking events with engineering staff and interns  Receive company-led training  Tour San Diego production facilities  Present project to Solar Management and UCSD representatives  Represent project at TIP poster session at the Corporate Affiliate Program evening

Solar specializes in tailoring project designs to meet the customer needs.

Electrical system customizations, on a per-project basis, can range from adding custom devices, customer provided devices, complex yard-valve systems, or off-skid devices related to balance of plant operations.

As the electrical system design increases in complexity, the new devices need to be accounted for when sizing the power distribution fusing for the electrical system.  Additionally, the sizing decision must follow the NEC & CENELEC certification guidelines as required by the project.

The intern will create the Total Console Load Calculator tool, which will perform a calculation, following NEC & CENELEC certification, to properly size the leading and subsequent fuses going to the turbine package control system console.

Additionally, the intern would have the opportunity to develop and document a process for determining how to accommodate continuous vs. non-continuous loads, as well as unknown loads from devices sourced by the customer.

Having a tool that catalogs all device amperages and calculates estimated loads on a per-project console basis, design engineers will be able to size fuses for complex systems with confidence increasing safety for the unit and reducing risk of rework.

Deliverables:

Research problem statement, certification requirements, & collect device amperage data Add collected amperage data to Promis-e V8i and collaborate with Promis-e v8i IT team to extract data into a report per project basis Create the Total Console Load Calculator while taking into consideration the best way to account for continuous vs. non-continuous loads, unknown customer device loads, yard valve sequencing loads, etc. Document for project work, as needed

1. Model Based Analytics- TIP - This Project is in the process of reviewing current applicants, please check back for changes to application status.
Sensors and actuators used for control and protection functions for turbine engine, driven and ancillary equipment supply a large quantity of data for Solar Turbines engine and package systems. However, many desirable process variables are not measured directly due to cost or complexity.  The student team will apply identification, estimation, and control theory tools to strategically utilize desirable process variables to develop new and enhanced functionality to gas turbine engines and packages.  Additionally, the team will display the new data on a computer located in a control room or directly mounted to the turbine package for utilization by the customer.

Deliverables:

Investigate how existing instrumentation and system models can be used to create virtual sensing and redundancy capabilities. Investigate the estimation and identification of upstream disturbances for use in control applications. Explore the benefits, limitations, and applicability of adding feed-forward control scheme, which exploits uncertain forecast measurements, in order to improve disturbance rejection capabilities in the control of gas turbines. Collaborate with software developers to incorporate newly estimated values into the control system display computer. Team will develop a set of automated tests for the performance scripts that can provide a range of inputs to the scripts and compare the output values to a set of expected results.

1. Hybrid Power System Modeling and Design- TIP - ALL STUDENT OPENINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED
Iris develops hybrid power systems, fundamentally consisting of a diesel generator augmented with lithium ion batteries and solar power, for expeditionary military missions and disaster relief.  The resulting necessary combination of transient sources and sinks at widely varying voltage forms and power levels creates a very challenging controls problem.  Advanced MATLAB / Simulink models are needed to inform the improved performance of existing systems and guide the design of new systems.  Students will characterize by test existing components, i.e., generators, batteries, and solar power generators, develop component level MATLAB / Simulink models, validate the models, and combine them into complete system models.  The project will conclude with a functional MATLAB / Simulink design tool and an associated final report documenting the successful model correlation.

The proposed project has the essential educational characteristics of being interesting and challenging.  Especially given the strong mentorship the students will receive from our world-class staff and consultants, this will provide a terrific educational experience.  Additionally, this is important, both for Iris and the customer community we serve.  Success in this technology area reduces the amount of fuel that needs to be carried into a battle theatre, which ultimately saves lives in reduced convoy casualties.  We also seek to provide an affordable means of getting disaster struck areas back on their feet by providing an affordable power option with a small carbon footprint.  This work matters.

Required Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Simulink
  • Strong interest in developing control systems
  • Knowledge of basic power electronics (for the EE, not required for others)

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong background in power electronics
  • Expert skills in MATLAB and Simulink
  • Experience in developing control systems (as opposed to just an interest)
